My Dixie Chicken has recently been diagnosed. She is currently on Humulin N and I have read some things that this is not a good insulin for me to be using. Her #'s are good but she is still urinating and has severe diarehea (and not using her litter box). I have tried 3 or 4 different medications for the diarrhea and nothing seems to help. Although she won't take the most recent one....I even cooked her her own chicken and she still walked away from it. I'm at my wits end and thought if maybe I changed the insulin that would help. Any input you can give me would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hello there

When did the diarrhea start? Did you change her food or something to trigger it?

Has she stopped eating?

Hello, welcome to FDMB,

Aw, it sounds like you're having a really tough time... (((Hugs))) But you've found a great forum for advice and support.

Humulin N is not considered an ideal insulin for cats because it can be rather 'harsh'. Most people here use Lantus/Glargine, PZI insulins/'Prozinc', or Levemir.

May I ask you a couple of questions?
How long has your cat had the diarrhoea?
What dose of insulin is she on?
What are you feeding her generally (wet/canned food or dry food)?
And are you testing your cat's blood glucose levels at home? And if not, would you be willing to learn? It's not difficult, and we can help you.

@Wendy - it started right around the same time she was diagnosed. I have not changed her food (although I have tried - she just won't anything else but her Indoor Cat Chow (dry). She has not stopped eating - she's eats like a horse!!! She does like the non-gravy Fancy Feast but she only eats a very little bit and then goes her dry food bowl.

@Elizabeth & Bertie - answer to question #1 is above. #2. she is on 3 units twice a day #3. I feed her Purina Indoor Cat Chow (dry) - she won't eat anything else, I've tried everything. #4. I haven't started testing at home yet since this is very new. I am waiting to hear back from my vet regarding this. If she asks me what kind of insulin I would like to use - what should I tell her?
