Today I got a call from my vet with the results of Azzy's urinalysis and they wanted me to start low with some insulin. She was so impressed with everything I was doing for the cats- home testing, the food, etc

I just gave Azzy his first shot

I think what may be messing with Abigail's numbers is I NOW have the perfect way to get her to eat all of her food. I've been putting her in the bedroom during the day. At first I thought I was being mean, but my bedroom is big, there is water and food, and a liter box. She can sleep on the bed and not be disturbed. She is more of a grazer but my fat cat will eat her food if I leave it out. So I've decided that the best thing for during the day is to let her be alone in the bedroom. There is a big window for her to stare at the birds. It's perfect.
 
Bummer that you now have 2 to test and shoot...been there done that. I would highly recommend getting a second meter for Azzy so it is easier to keep track of averages in BGs. As well as figuring out a way to make sure you give the right shot to the right cat. When I had both Autumn and Musette on insulin what I did was shoot and feed them in two seperate rooms of the house. So what I did was fill both syringes and then put Musette's on the nightstand in the bedroom, and feed her in there, and put Autumn's on the kitchen counter and feed her in the kitchen. That way when I took their food to them in the morning and evening the right syringe was with the right cat.

You may want to monitor Azzy pretty closely as he had a huge response to his first shot last night so as his shed fills you may find that even that tiny little .5u maybe too much for him and you will need to reduce pretty quickly. But since he wasn't terribly high to begin with perhaps he will come off pretty quickly especially if you can get him to exercise a little more and take off some of the extra weight.

Look on the bright side, you don't have to worry about the diabetic cat getting into high carb food because you are feeding low carb food to both kitties now. :roll:

You are not being mean. She has everything she needs, except a companion. Are you sure you can't stay home more and be hee dedicated cat slave? :shock: :-D :shock:

Yes, that is tough to have one grazer and one gobbler. I have 2 gobblers and one grazer. I've done the restricted quarters too with the grazer. I also have slowly switched to a more of a meal time type feeding schedule. Even so, the grazer takes 30 minutes of so to eat and the gobblers take 2 minutes.

At least my grazer has learned to growl at the other cats trying to steal his food but I still need to monitor closely and take up his food dish when he walks away. Otherwise, there is no way to tell how much food he actually eats in a day and one of the gobblers has just gotten down to his 'svelte' ideal weight after 1 year of dieting.
 
LOL Abigail growls when she eats. It's so funny sounding. It's almost like a combo of a meow and a growl like she is super happy to eat.

What we did this morning and last night is do one at a time. Abigail is used to the routine. Azzy is a little squirmy still and I hate making him upset because shhh he is my favorite! He normally snugglies with me but he didn't last night :(
 
LOL sorry I have to laugh on the area restrictions to make sure who eats what...Oh how I can relate. Meal-time around here is a 3 ring circus to get everyone where they need to be to get fed. Duvessa goes in a large dog kennel, because she is too shy to eat with the other kids, Patches, Sophia, and Hazy all go into large carriers on the dinningroom table because they are bullies and piglets, Maxwell & Lady Jane Grey will only eat with each other so they share a bowl in the bedroom..Arabella will only eat with Maxwell and Lady Jane Grey but has to have her own dish on the opposite side of the bed, and finally Bert & Casper share a bowl in the kitchen (they are littermates), Amon-Ra and Tre'Vona share a bowl in the kitchen, and Myrrdin and Angel share the third bowl in the kitchen, and lastly Autumn won't eat without the others for company so she eats in the kitchen as well but wants her own dish which works well since she is the only one getting Fancy Feast while the rest are getting Friskies and 9-lives.

Now Duvessa, Sophia, Lady J, Maxwell, and Hazy will all just go to their spots to eat but Patches thinks this is a game, so he runs and hides under the table where we can't get him. But his stomach always gets the better of him before the meal is served and he comes up and rubs on my legs until I pick him up and carry his Meowjesty back to his carrier. :roll:

Clearly I have had it easy - granted, I've never had more than three at a time - but they've always just eaten out of bowls lined up in a row. I figured if someone was getting shortchanged, they'd learn not to dilly dally at mealtime. And when one got older and just wasn't up to fighting for his food - the rest seemed to understand that and leave his dish alone.

Now Jez is always convinced that the other bowl has better food.....so she'll take a couple bites out of hers, wait for Batcat to come up for air and then go for his bowl....he then happily takes hers over so it works out fine. And they have this thing about leaving just a little bit of food in at least one bowl - they'll go over periodically to make sure its still there. I guess its emergency rations in case i decide to quite feeding them :).
 
My other cats think Abigail is getting something so special. She eats the Young Again dry food because she will not eat wet food but at $50 a bag Abigail is the ONLY one who is going to eat it. Funny story I ran out of cans one day and I gave them all the food. They just stared at it. I said this is what you've been begging for then proceeded to meow and beg. My only concern is Abby was getting a little thin and Miss Kitty would always eat her leftovers. Abby likes to graze throughout the day so putting her in the bedroom when I wasn't home seemed like an ok idea

Whatever works......it does seem like a great idea when you're dealing with a grazer. Funny story - you'd think after five years together mine would be friends - and mostly there are...BUT if I happen to shut one of them out on the sunporch or in a room - the other will never let me know...they just give me a look like - what other cat?
 
That is how mine are. They all just tolerate each other. I miss Bastice and Abigail. At one point I only had two and they loved each other so much. They snuggled cleaned each other It was so sweet. But even though they aren't snuggly I see Azzy and Audrey playing. And it gives me comfort that I rescued all of these cats and gave them a live of luxury. Seriously. I want to be reincarnated as one of my cats. You get fed every day. Brushed every day. ALL OF THEM sleep in or around the bed. You get good food and if you beg enough you will get the people food. I will go into debt to make sure they have proper vet care. It is a good life
 
LOL I've actually had my vet tell me that he wants to come back as a stray cat and end up on my doorstep. :-D Because usually by the time I hit their clinic doors with one of mine I have already done 3/4 of their job for them. I come in with a complete list of symptoms from what their current BGs are (yes, even the civies) their weight, what their poop looks like, when they peed and pooped last, size, color and volume of said pee and poop. What their temp is, and what I believe are the possiblities of what is wrong with them. Then once they confirm what is wrong I end up telling them what drugs I want to treat said condition. And will give them the research and reasoning why I want one drug over the others.

In fact when Autumn had her dental because I was in a hurry to get her home as we had a blizzard headed our way I didn't notice that the new vet in the office had sent her home on Amoxicillan so I called back up and told them I needed Clindamycin for her...at first the new vet started to debate with me that it was fine to give to a diabetic then I hear my regular vet in the background tell her...If that is Mel about Autumn's antibiotic just give her what she wants..she knows that cat better than Autumn knows herself. :lol:

That is so funny! My vet is thoroughly impressed. She said she usually doesn't have owners who take so much time to research and care for their animals. I honestly think I should be doing more for them but as long as they are happy, fed, groomed and loved I will be happy. I just know I need to get my civie Audrey's teeth cleaned and it is just so expensive and out of my price range right now. They said it's not an emergency because it's just a cleaning and everything else is OK with her but I feel so bad because I know she needs it. It's just for me with 4 of them I've been doing the who needs it the most. Abigail needed a lot of vet care or she would have died. So I paid for that. Her initial diabetes diagnosis was super expensive because I didn't know anything. Azrael only cost me the yearly exam fee, blood work and the urinalysis. For him I didn't need their help catching his urine. I did that at home. And since I knew how to take the BG readings the vet said she didn't need to see him unless the numbers were really off. Abigail was all new to me. I paid for two full day stays at the vets. Once for a curve and once because they couldn't get any urine and I couldn't get it at home. Plus I took her back numerous times just for a BG test. It's good to know a little bit because it will save you a lot at the vets. Plus the personality of Abigail and Azrael are so different. Abigail gets so stressed out on the 15 minute ride that she has soiled her carrier, panting and crying. Once she gets to the vets she is already a handful. Then after she is there for a few hours she gets nasty to the techs. I wish the vets could do house calls. Abigail is the sweetest thing. You walk in the door and she just wants all the attention. Azrael is super scared at the vet. I have to hold him in a blanket the entire time. He is so docile that the vet was looking at his teeth, he had a little bit of tartar on the back of his teeth and she just wiped it off with her finger and he didn't even move. So he is much easier at the vets and easier overall. Abigail is a handful. It's crazy how different they all are.
