Looking good there Tuna, :cat:
Happy Day 7

So I've noticed when tuna hasn't eaten recently his BG is actually higher??? Does anyone know anything about that?

Hmm that is strange  I’m wondering if maybe his body releases some glucose in preparation for a meal? I’m not sure if that’s a thing, just me speculating! Either way his numbers are looking fantastic :cat:

Wild right? This cat will forever keep me guessing :joyful:

My vet called me to say tuna is no longer diabetic but he has a 50-60% chance of falling out of remission :(

Did he give any reasoning or sources for that? I’ve personally never heard of that before. Some cats do come out of remission but many stay in remission for a long time, if not the rest of their lives. I have heard that cats that come out of remission have a lower chance of achieving it again, but I’ve never heard of that figure before.

No of course I got no reasoning behind her logic lol, this is the same clinic that told me to never BG test and that 4u was a good starting dose so eh. I feel like she said that just to ruin my day to be honest.

I would not worry about that comment from them too much  In my experience, a lot of vets are way too quick to say a cat is in remission and they are also fine with a cat’s BG running much higher than we like here. So if you take those two things into consideration then I’d agree, most of those “remissions” probably won’t be very strong. But when a cat spends more time in normal BG numbers like Tuna is seeing right now, they are more likely to have a strong remission.

Now that’s not to say that they’ll never come out of remission, of course it’s always possible. That’s why we recommend testing their BG at least once a month once they’re OTJ, just to make sure. But I think Tuna is looking great :cat: And FWIW, my girl was seeing much higher numbers than Tuna is during her OTJ trial and she was in remission for two years until a case of pancreatitis. But she had two other cases of pancreatitis before that and still managed to stay in remission!

Thank you so much, your words really helped calm my nerves a bit. I'm so sorry about the pancreatitis flares, it's so stressful :( I love this forum because you all know exactly what to say to calm me down. Forever indebted to you all <3

What she said! ^

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!

Add to your signature OTJ then the date
I'm so happy for you and Tuna ♥

I'm super happy for you and Tuna! That was super quick! :woot:

I wonder if the reason your vet thinks he could go out of remission is because you said he was a little husky (a chonk, an absolute unit, if you will)

I would maybe try to keep trimming him down and make sure he's active, just to be safe.

I remember at one point you saying you were vegan- can you hook me up with some of your favorite vegan recipes before you disappear into the fabled OTJ ether lands? ;)

I will absolutely continue de fattening my husky man lol! Are you on the FDMB Facebook page? I thinnnkkkk I saw you there once, do you have dyed hair too? I think it could have been green? If you saw tunas party post on the Facebook page you can totally message me on messenger! Might be easier to ferry recipes back and forth :joyful:

That is because eating stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin, which in turn lowers the BG. I would continue to give small snacks throughout the day and evening. Do you have an auto feeder for night and when you are not there?
I’m sorry I missed this thread. I wasn’t around for a couple of weeks.
Looking forward to seeing the video!
