Can anyone give me some ideas on how to get my girl to eat? She was eating up till this morning now she just walks away from the pill pockets, raw hamburger and even lobster juice. All she will do is drink water. She won't touch kitty milk nothing. I don't know what to do!!! She fights and yowls so bad when you try and force feed her and she is nothing but skin and bones I am terrified I will hurt her. I am desperate I don't want to lose my baby

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

It sounds like she is having severe stomach pain which could be pancreatitis. A kitty yowling and refusing to eat like that is an emergency! Please call your vet and get your baby girl in for treatment!

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

Sudden behavior changes = vet visit
What was her last glucose level?
Are you testing for urine ketones?
Does her breath smell like nail polish remover (possible ketones)or urine (possible renal disease)?
If you gently pull up the scruff of the neck, does it stay tented (dehydration) or snap fight back?

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

She has kidney issue and is on pepcid AC and appetite stimulants and kindney support meds but I can't even get those into her

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

Jen I'm so sorry Tuffy is feeling so poorly. I've gone through a few of the old posts. It sounds like you were doing the best that you can. You live in a remote area and Tuffy gets totally stressed getting into the carrier. Were you ever able to get her to the vet for bloodwork? If I remember correctly she is not diabetic. It is very possible that her kidney values have gone up very high. She could also have something else going on. Pancreatitis is a possibility as mentioned above. As far as getting her to eat I wish I could give you an anwser. I know you were opening up multiple cans of food for her last week. Are you still doing fluids? CRF cats can get really sick and it is so hard to get them to eat. It sounds like she wants nothing to do with the syringe feeding. I really believe sometimes we have to ask ourselves what are we doing? Is Tuffy trying to tell you something. This is a heartbreaking situation. Tuffy really needs to go to the vet. If her kidneys are really that bad there may be nothing the vet can do. When my CRF kitty was with me I tried so many things and nothing really worked all the time. I tried so many different cat foods, people tuna, people salmon, baby food, sprinkling bonito flakes on the food. I've heard of sprinkling parmesan cheese but never tried it.

Hugs to you and Tuffy
Sandy

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

Tuffy is not diabetic sorry I should have mentioned that she has kidney issues. She had blood work done Wednesday and her kidney values are actually better than in July still high but better. She is anemic which we also have meds for. We got a syringe of food in her with her appetite stimulant in it we are going to give her another syringe with her kidney meds in shortly. Right now she is resting on a heating pad that's on low. I am giving her a chance to come around if she isn't better by Monday it might be time to let her go......I can't even imagine doing that right now but I can't let her starve to death

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

I'm glad her values are better. Tuffy may just rally. I hope she does. I'm glad you were able to get something in her.

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

Thanks Sandy I am praying for some sign of improvement I can't imagine losing another baby we lost her best buddy Boomer (my diabetic boy) in October

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

I will you and Tuffy in my thoughts and heart this weekend. I know how much watching your baby wasting away hurts esp knowing you are doing all you can. Spend as much time as you can loving Tuffy and talking to her and also get some pictures of her whenever shes having a "good" day! I wish you many more happy and as painfree as possible days with your beloved Tuffy.

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

I hate the fact that I got to go to work this morning I'd rather be home with my girl

Re: Tuffy has stopped eating!!!!!!!!

When Tiger was first diagnosed he had severe dehydration and would not eat. He was skin and bone, too. We feed with syringe with appetite stimulants for a week and I put parmasean cheese on his wet food and he would eat a little of it. Also, they checked his blood and said his potassium was very low, so they started him on potassium supplement and once he was getting that his appetite was great. I boiled chicken and he ate some of that. He is eating good now and still likes his boiled chicken. He was to the point that the vet had suggested a feeding tube. Good luck and I will pray for you and Tuffy

Here are some suggestions from another member for enticing a cat to eat:

Enticing a Cat to Eat

Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
  • FortiFlora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
  • parmesean cheese
  • smashed crumbles of dry food
  • bonito/tuna flakes (Can be found at Asian markets or sometimes in the Asian food section of a large grocery store.)
  • halo chicken treats (freeze dried chicken) -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
  • pour a little water from tuna in water over food (I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats and it shouldn't contain soy -- check labels)
  • powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
  • trader joe tuna for cats
  • baby food -- beechnut or Gerber Stage 2 -- you want a baby food that is only a protein + broth (although the Gerber contains cornstarch). It should have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
  • kentucky fried chicken
  • deli turkey /chicken
  • plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
  • canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
  • chicken broth -- low sodium

If enticements don't work, you should consider:
-assist feeding ( syringe or make little meatballs and place in mouth)
-and/or talking to your vet about appetite stimulents ( mirtazapine or cyproheptidine)

Thanks for all the suggestions but Tuffy passed away this evening with us petting and loving her

Dear Jen,

Oh, I am so very sorry that you have lost your "Tuffy". She was the same age as my Ketchie that I have been posting so much about. You had posted on my thread, and now I feel so very sad that your sweet Tuffy has passed. If she passed away at home, I hope it was peaceful and I keep praying that my Ketchie would go here at home (her twin sister died at her home under the bed last year).

Your Tuffy sounded like such a sweetheart, and I hope and pray that you and your family will be able to get through this knowing how much so many others care.

In 2009, I lost five cats in 6 months, and it is very sad, when our furbabies get up in age, and especially have these chronic illnesses with kidney disease.

Take care, and know that I am sending many thoughts and prayers to you.
