That would only work if you were watching him, I think. You need to check it after 15 seconds. It will continue to darken after that.
Does he have a favorite spot in the box he goes? Maybe lay some plastic wrap down so it doesn’t get sucked into the litter?

He has a place he generally goes, but he's a kicker. Would pressing it into the sawdust shortly after he goes work? Not sure how to stalk him quite that thoroughly.

Alternatively, if FCC is prone to ketones and doesn't like you around his litter box, there are blood monitors out there that will test ketones and BG. They're listed here:

Somehow I missed the part where I could mix his non-clumping litter with water to get a rough result. I did this and it made me feel better to see that it was negative. I know that it won't be super accurate, but it was helpful.
Today I was able to catch him just as he got out of the box so I stuck a strip against where he had just gone and got the same result. Thanks for all the help. I guess I'll just keep getting it when I can and however I can.
