This morning I wanted to try and give Nala 1.25 units after not seeing anything go below the 200s and it definitely worked.

Please see Nala's SS in my signature.
Her AMPS this morning was 247 with 1.25 unit of Vetsulin I just checked her at +4 and she is at 77! I am thinking her nadir is around +5 or +6 and I have never seen her numbers go below 200

I just gave her a tablespoon of her old Friskies Chicken with Gravy is that enough to raise her BG a little???? I have honey just incase as well..How often should I check her before her nadir hits (around +5 or +6)????

--------------------EDIT------------------
Sorry again for a freak-out post. I Just checked her now (20 min later) and her BG is 82 I think the gravy helped any more advice is greatly appreciated! I will check her again at +6

That is a fast, sharp drop! Glad the food worked. She might bounce right away or she might have a longer cycle - it would be nice to see which. I'd check around +5-6 if you can.

No need to apologize, we're all here to help each other.

As to her numbers her nadir seems to be about +5 before the vetsulin starts to wear off so I wouldn't worry about giving her anything else to raise her bg more. That was a fast drop, but you may be in the right ball park....maybe try to eye ball 1.10 units?

Thank you both so much for the quick replies I don't know what I would do without this place =)

I will see what her numbers look like for her PMPS I am using U-40 syringes so there are only 1 unit markings but I can definitely eyeball it.

I was searching for someone else who had success with Vetsulin (not very many on here) and I recently discovered NitroViper's posts from a while back on his kitty Wease who was able to get OTJ on Vetsulin. So I have high hopes that Nala can do it too =)

If you get U-100 syringes with half unit markings, you can dose as finely as 0.2 units of Vetsulin.

Vetsulin is 40%, i.e. 0.4, of the concentration of a U-100 insulin.
This means that you can multiply the syringe marking by 0.4 to get the Vetsulin dose.

syringe
mark * 0.5 = Vetsulin dose
0.5 * 0.4 = 0.2
1.0 * 0.4 = 0.4
1.5 * 0.4 = 0.6
2.0 * 0.4 = 0.8
2.5 * 0.4 = 1.0

Alternatively, giving 0.25 or 0.5 units of Vetsulin is possible with a U-40 syringe. You can make a reference gauge by following these instructions.

As BJM mentioned the u100 syringes help to give a more specific dose. I was on caninsulin until recently and whilst I asked my vet to switch to lantus he was confident that he had had cats go into remission on caninsulin. If you monitor and adjust the dose and understand the insulin I am sure it is possible. Having said that from what I had read I wanted to give lantus ago.

I was actually going to pick up the U-100 syringes at Walmart when I got my Relion Confirm supplies (before Nala's vet appointment to pick up the insulin and get training) but since I had no idea what dose I would be giving her the pharmacist told me I should find out first even though I told her I just needed the U-100 syringes.

My vet ended up giving me a free box of the U-40 syringes that were still sealed because she said a lady that returned them had arthritis and said they were defective and not working for her (they tested a couple out of the box and said they were working fine). My vet also said that I should not get any other kind of syringes because the measurements are not going to be right. (But I trust you guys!! The vet sells a box of 100 for $30 so I'm sure that's way more expensive than syringes at walmart)

If I go pick up some of the U-100 syringes from Walmart what exact kind do I tell the pharmacist that I need?

Also, I just checked Nala for her PMPS and her BG shot back up to 386! :( Is that what you call a bounce why does that happen? I don't understand why it would jump up so high when she was doing so well I feel like I messed up. I wonder if it was because I gave her some of the Friskies with gravy because I was scared she would go hypo :/

The higher carb food could bring up the numbers. But also likely a bounce. When her body perceives a lower number than it's used to, the
pancreas "panics" and releases extra glucose that send the levels up. Nothing you can control. As her body gets used to lower numbers, she'll stop bouncing.

You'll want U-100, 30 or 31 gauge, 3/10 ml/cc with half unit markings; check them before purchasing.
