Trying to get civie cat to pee on command, lol

My civie Smokey is 16ish and has been losing weight, so I bought her to the vet this morning. She is eating, although not as much as she used to. She uses the litter box fine, and acts like a kitten playing with her toys. I have noticed a stiffness though when getting up.

When I took her in for her annual visit earlier this year, the vet detected a heart murmur. Today he said it is slightly worse, a 3 on a scale of 1 - 6. He talked about her just getting older, but also other possible things such as hypothyroidism. He drew blood while we were there, but her bladder was empty, so I need to try to collect a urine sample. She hasn't gone since before 8, and it is now 8 hours later. I know she has to go, she has visited the litterbox 3 times in the last 20 min, but won't go. I left a layer of litter, but put a clean plastic bag over it, and the tiny scoop of non-absorbent litter stuff that the vet gave me. Maybe I should go get some fish tank gravel so that it feels more like litter?

I was really hoping to get the sample today before they close. Just looking for a little cooperation, Smokey ;-) Otherwise the vet told me to pick up the boxes tomorrow night, and not to put it down until I am ready to collect the next morning.

Anyone have any suggestions for getting a cat to pee on command? Picking her up and putting her in the box and begging hasn't worked, :lol:

hmm .. how about turning on a faucet when she is in the LB? :lol: J/K .. But I really do hope you can get that sample soon!
 
Little stinker.... As soon as the office closed, I took the plastic off and... I KNEW it would happen. She ran right in and dug around a little and then went pee. I guess I will have to go get the fish tank gravel to give that a try.

Funny you mention tuning on the faucet, Devon... I just happened to be washing my hands one of the times that she walked into the LB... and I wondered if it would help if I left the water on for an extra second. It didn't :YMSIGH:

Tara, that's funny... Dip her paw... Ok, now picture this. Actually picked her up and placed her In front of the box, then took her front paws and helped her scratch in the fake litter and the plastic. A friend told me that was how she litter trained her kitten. Yeah, that didn't work either. She just thinks I am nuts. :lol:

I have been thinking about how much easier it was to get a sample from my GA dog. Although that was pretty comical too... Picture me following the dog all around the yard with my disposable aluminum pan, he keeps looking back at me like "hey, I could use a little privacy here", and he'd hop off to try to lose me. "Awe, man... You're still following me?" He finally decided I wasn't giving up and As soon as he started, I put down the pan which startled him a little, he jumped, stepped in the pan and we lost most of the sample, :lol: :lol: :lol:

Oh, the things we do for our babies.
 
put the box in the bathroom with the kitty and then go in yourself and pee..

maybe- monkey see- monkey do? :lol:

I had success this morning! I did pick up the boxes.... Neither cat seemed to mind too much, until this morning when Smokey got extremely vocal! I did pick up some fish tank gravel, and when I put her box down, she was not impressed... She did not like it, but the need to go won out after three trips in and out of the box, LOL.

Now have to run to the vet in about 20 min. I hope all tests will be normal. The vet said he should know by Monday about both the blood and urine tests. Fingers crossed for no bad news.

It is possible to squeeze a cat's bladder and express the pee, especially if they are full. I had to do this 3x daily for a couple months for a cat of mine who had an injury and couldn't pee by himself. I wouldn't recommend trying it without being taught by an experienced vet or vet tech, though. It was kind of nervewracking at first. You have to squeeze HARD, and I was always terrified that I might be squeezing the wrong organ and burst something by mistake!
 
Wow, that would be nerve wracking... But it is amazing what we can do, when we have to. I just really hope that I don't ever have to do that. Thanks for sharing the option though, I appreciate it.
