Hi,
Trina got the radioiodine I-131 treatment yesterday for her hyperthyroid disease. She ate some food last night but did not eat her breakfast today. At 6:00a.m. is when she gets her once a day dose of 2 units of Prozinc. So since she didnt' eat the nurse did not give her the insulin. The nurse said Trina was very excited to see her & kept talking to her & wanted lots of love. The nurse stayed in the room as long as she was allowed to with her but she didn't eat. Trina always eats her breakfast. I am extremely upset now wondering what will happen to her glucose from not having insulin today. Is this going to through her diabetes out of whack?
Also, they have to order a special type of litter which is soft & flushable due to the urine being radioactive. So they have a carboard type box in there with this litter in it which she is sleeping in!!! So she really hasn't gone to the bathroom yet. But now she's probably confused thinking the litterbox is a bed & doesn't know where to go to the bathroom. She needs to pee that radioactive iodine out of her ASAP!!! I am very upset.

Trina! You got the same RI131 that my DH got 20 years ago to kill HIS thyroid! I didn't know it was used for cats also. Yes baby, pee that stuff out...

If it throws her FD out of whack, then we'll just have to get it BACK in whack huh! Sounds like she's in good hands but any time our furbabies are sick upsets us Mama and PapaBeans.

Big hugs,

Once a day? With that dose, we commonly split it into 2 shots of 1 unit, 12 hours apart. Do you not feed her at night? ProZinc only lasts about 12 hours, so she's on something of a roller coaster giving insulin only once a day.

I would not be overly concerned over missing just the one shot. Have you ever experienced a "fur shot" in the time you have been treating Trina? Same thing, really. Her BG will most likely be higher, but with Prozinc you should be able to right that ship within a couple cycles.

My kitty Bob spent 3 days in the ER in May. Same sort of situation with the litter box, food bowl and "bed" all in a small area. First off, "boxes" are Bob's favorite thing. You put a box on the floor, no matter how small, and 14 lb Bob is going to squeeze some parts of his body into it and make you believe it was custom made for him to sleep in.... So Bob is in this tiny cage with a blankie to sleep on, a dish of food to eat, and a small tray of litter to pee in. Two nights in a row, he apparently flipped the tray over, dumped the litter, rearanged the furniture.... he drug the blanket into the litter tray, and peed on the litter pile. When the tech came in the next morning, Bob was sleeping in the litter tray on the blanket. He looked up at the tech like he was asking "what, you wanted me to pee in my bed?"

Trina just doesn't like her accommodations right now. When she decides to pee, she'll pick the spot that she decides the pee belongs in, then she'll "demand" that somebody come clean up the mess. She's really in charge, they just don't know that yet.

Hoping to hear good news from you soon,
Carl

That story about Bob is so funny! He sure showed them! I hope trina decides where she wants to pee soon. I want that radioiodine out of her!
I spoke with the ICU unit & they said she ate a few kernels this morning so they gave her insulin a few hours later than normal. I don't know if they reduced the amount or not. I left a message asking that. But now I'm very worried that "a few kernels" are not enough food to keep her sugar from dropping too low. I just am in shock she isn't eating. She doesn't get upset that easy & they said she is very happy when they go in the room to see her. Very talkative & wants love. Problem is with her being radioactive they only go in the room twice a day. Uugh. I have been a complete nervous basket case about this whole process.

For 6 years Trina has been on 4 different types of insulin (they kept getting discontinued) & has always done great on 1 dose a day. I have asked about doing it twice a day but the vet felt she was very well regulated on once a day. But once she has recovered from this treatment I will ask again about changing her to twice a day.

Thank you everyone for sending hugs! Trina & I really appreciate it!

You might see if they can get a bit of play from her - it can stimulate the hunt, catch, kill, eat, groom, sleep cycle and help her eat.

I know they can't stay in there long, but maybe using something (towel on a stick???) to give her a bit of petting would help too.

Good that they aren't giving insulin with her not eating.

It may just be a jolt to the system to have had the I-131.

That is a great idea to ask them to try & play with her! When we play at home she does end up going to her food dish afterwards to nibble! Thank you! I talked to the doc this afternoon & she said she ate a very small amount of food & they gave her 1 unit of insulin. They were going to do a glucose check but I'm still waiting to hear back from them so see how that went. I had also told them to try to give her as much attention as they can, that's when she gets excited & likes to eat. I just want her back home, I miss her so very much. And I'm so upset that she's not eating much that I"m not eating either (nor sleeping)! I'm just very worried about her. Thanks again.
