Hey sweet peeps!

I have been getting so much information that I'm almost on overload, but I will forge ahead with every confidence in the world that I'm going to get all this stuff down to a routine before long!

One thing I am lacking.... a suitable treat for my sweet Boo.

I want to give her something after sticking her, and she is not much of a "treats" kind of baby. And currently she is fighting me tooth n nail on switching to wet food... for her it's dry or nothing. She might eat a Pounce if I put it in her bowl, but it's high carb and I don't stick her near her bowl. I tried the new "Thrill" treats made by Petco because they are freezedried meat... no grains, etc. All 3 of my cats might have well of said out loud, "you GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!" They didn't go for them at ALL. I think, in fact, that they laughed at me for buying them. It was ugly.

Would love to hear what you guys do/give as stick treats. Thanks in advance for your fun, crazy, splendid ideas!

I use roasted, dried chicken from Petsmart. Tony loves it - partly I think cuz its crunchy. If your guys have already turned down something like this, it might not be a viable alternative. I know that some people steam little cubes of chicken breast and freeze them to use for treats. Just take out a few and leave in the fridge. I'm pretty sure that I've seen a list for lo carb treats but confess that I've not looked at it as I didn't need to. I'm sure that someone will post the list.

I use freeze dried salmon for Harley...he goes crazy for it. He does not like the other flavors (beef, shrimp, whitefish). It is made by BeefEaters (it is in the kittie section). I get it at PetSmart. What I like about it is Petsmart will refund $$ if kittie does not like the stuff.

Treats I give here are boiled (no salt or spices) cubed chicken breasts...side benefit is you never run out of chicken broth for cooking...lol
Human tuna in packed in water
Sardines
cubes of raw chicken
salad shrimp again boiled in plain water.
Bites of raw hamburger
catnip
Valerian
for Maxwell who adores his brush...just an extra long brushing session
Wlmart also carries a freeze dried duck jerky for dogs sold by the brand name Waggin' Train which I originally got for the dog but the cats love them too. They are fairly pricey, but since they are made for dogs are large pieces and I simply use scissors to cut them into kitty size pieces.

Excellent! I'm writing all of these down!

And I had no idea I could return opened things to Petsmart. Score! I'm already starting with a credit!!

If your cats won't go for the freeze-dried treats, you could also try EVO cravings. They look very much like a Greenie, but they're grain free. I believe they sell them at PetCo.

The Petsmart here in Mpls that I go to will allow me to return stuff if Harley has turned his nose up at it. Of course, usually there is only 1 small piece gone - Harley is a picky treat eater. Now food, he will eat anything but the kitchen sink.

You should ask them if you can return items next time you are at the store.

My DH made Nan his very own Cat Turkey Jerky yesterday. He LOVES it. It's ground turkey from the grocery (could grind your own if so inclined), and the preservative that is used for jerky, and then dry on low heat until it reaches the level of dry and crunchy you want. You can put in a smoker too if kitty likes that (Nan does). Yes, I know a bit high in sodium, but Nan is in love, he DANCES for this stuff. Next batch we are going to add some dried catnip for him. Could also add chicken or beef flavorings.

Speaking of dehydrators.....I make treats for my gang by taking their regular Friskies adding catnip, then putting it in little dollops on the plastic sheets used for fruit leather, dehydrate on low heat until as crunchy as I want....we call them kitty kisses and my crew goes bonkers for them..so much so I need to replace the dehydrator...lol I burned the first one up.

Omgosh, you guys are giving me SUCH an education!! What the heck is a dehydrator?!!!

You know, Boo loooooooooooooooves catnip. I never thought about putting some on wet food. The only problem with catnip toys in my house is that she loves them SO much that sometimes she pees on them to keep the other 2 cats away from them. This could get comical.

I'm unemployed so Junior's getting cheap treats and free hugs. Steamed chicken breasts, shredded into little chunks.

I also give his insulin shot while he's eating. His head is down and fangs are away from me. He's been growly sometimes but is still more interested in food.

My kitties love the dehydrated chicken treats at Petsmart.

They also go batty over the Dried Bonito Flakes made by Cat Man Doo. I get those at Natures Pet, they are like an all natural petstore. They are also at another pet boutique in town.

I have to give my non FD kitty the treats along with my FD kitty Dopey, or she will try to climb all over us to get them while I'm trying to test him.

I've felt like poking her to show her WHY he's getting all the treats, but I haven't done it yet. :o I'm kinda curious as to what her BG #'s, so I'm thinking about doing it more and more, but she's not as easy going as Dopey, so I can see a bloody hand in my future if I try

When I was posting the cat turkey jerky recipe yesterday I forgot this and it's really important:

IT MUST BE KEPT IN THE REFRIGERATOR

Even with the preservative, it's meat, there's still some moisture, perfect incubator for bacteria.

It could be frozen too for longer storage if you made a big batch.

All great ideas! I need to transition Boo off the Nature's Balance Perfect Bites... they are CRACK to her, but I have a feeling they aren't the best choice. Since this week has been so nuts (with 3 near hypos), I haven't had time or wherewithal to research that!
