confused_cat Now that we are diabetic, there are some special things to think about when traveling for 3/4 days. We will be traveling from WI to FL in a couple weeks, in a semi, with 3 cats. It usually takes us 3/4 days. we've done this 2x/year for 10 years.. but never with diabetes. I have some ideas and some questions. Of course i'm wondering if anyone here has found some good ideas as well as some "this doesn't work" ideas.

Would this be a topic i should put in Community instead of here?
Oliver is WAY more like his old self since he started getting insulin! He's back to slapping the "little boys" if they walk too close to him while he's in "his window". I'm pretty sure they are just yanking each other's chains.... good grief.

Thanks very much.. We're wishing you all blue skies and warm kitty snuggles

We have traveled cross-country twice along with several smaller trips north and/or south of Oregon over the past few years with Dude (diabetic) and Mittsi. We recently lost Dude but it was not due to his diabetes - it was just his little 18-year-old body that became tired and he had a mass in his chest which affected his breathing.

We had no problems finding pet-friendly motels - and usually stayed in motels rather than moving two cats in with friends when we were visiting. We had a big cage in the back of our van where they rode comfortably and safely. I've given many insulin shots in rest stops alongside the highways. I had a kit filled with syringes and testing equipment and we kept his insulin in the cooler.

In total, he and Mittsi covered over 20,000 miles with us - he was diabetic for over 8 years - and left us three weeks ago today. We're not sure if our remaining girl, Mittsi, will travel as well without her "buddy."

It sounds as if your fur-kids are already used to traveling and the diabetic should be fine - good luck and happy and safe traveling. If I can help with any other ideas please let me know.

Oh Emmy,
I am so sorry for your loss of Dude. I know you and Mittsi are heartbroken. Sometimes it's all i can do to try and remember that those we love are never far from us, even if we can't see them anymore. We just want them back for one more minute... I know Dude is close to you, wanting to help heal your hearts. Sweet Dude, the travel angel.
thank you for sharing that your travel with Dude was so relaxed.
I was mostly concerned about holding the temp. for the Lantus without freezing it. I'll just make sure that it's not directly in the ice in the cooler and we should be good to go.
Our kids really are used to traveling, usually Ollie comes in the hotel with us while the "little boys" stay in the cab. We brought all three of them in once. The little boys got WAY under the bed and it was quite interesting watching us take up the beds to try and get them out so we could leave in the morning.
Take good care of yourselves.
xoxo
