Traveling Tabbies Toby and Tommy

This morning, I sprung Tommy and Toby from the Baltimore SPCA and Humane Society, respectively, and they are likely in the arms of their new Dad, Don (and Chubby and Gus and Camille) by now. (Just got a call from Larry and indeed they are on their final leg.)

These are two awesome boys. Tommy is the more outgoing of the two. Sorry, no pictures from the transport (5 am is a bad time to plan), but Tommy was more than interested in sitting on my lap staring at Toby in his carrier with the door open while we waited for Stefani (and Toonces). Tommy has been on Glipizide and DM wet, running in the mid 200s when tested (at no particular time). It was an experiment for the Baltimore SPCA to put Tommy into its adoption program, and I hope that success of that experiment will encourage the shelter management to try rescue with diabetics again.

Toby is quiet, but a true lover. He and I talked all the way from the HS to the SPCA, and I told him all about Don and how he has rescued Gus and Camille and how we would be picking up his new brother Tommy and how likely it would be that he would not need shots after awhile, but that he would soon be introduced to ear pricks. Toby was on 5U BID of a compounded PZI and, according to his shelter records, about 6 weeks ago was getting a curve and had a +5 in the low 30s. He has been on wet and dry WD.

Don will be starting both boys on 1U Lantus, but I advised that he not shoot Toby tonight to allow his system to detox from the too-high PZI dosage. Just a suggestion, but that is what I would do. He also will transition them to low-carb, commercial canned food.

The introduction to ear pricks should have happened by now because Don likes to test a diabetic cat as soon as he gets him/her.

Thank you, Don, for taking these two marvelous boys. They look so much alike that you may need to put a collar on one of them until you can tell them apart. But I noticed that Tommy's eyes were both green and gold, and that Toby's were definitely gold.

Thank you Stefani and Larry (and Kitties) for helping with the transport this beautiful Saturday morning. The roads and weather were clear for me, and I understand they were for you too.

The two boys were very quit during the trip although Tommy meowed a little at the beginning of the trip. Neither of the them seem bothered when my dog Raggy sniffed their carriers.

I just got back home and have checked tommy & toby. Tommy was at 311 & toby at 343. I will check both again at 4:45, my work schedule time for meds, & probably start tommy tonight on 1 unit and if toby is maintaining I will wait till Sunday a.m. to start him. Both are presently making there rounds ( introductions ) to everyone. So far just a few snarls, definately a good sign. Tommy was either on my lap or next to me the hole way back. Toby just layed in his carrier while I rubbed his head. Both these guys are so layed back and enjoy hugs and pets, and I thought Camille was layed back. I can't wait for them to settle in and the fun starts. Thats what makes my day. I want to thank Venita for helping me get them and, stefani, larry & raggy for helping bring them to me. Thank you everyone.

Don... the world is a more perfect place with people like you in it... give a kiss to Tom and Toby's noses from me. Oh heck kiss them all and hug yourself... Good job. Thank you!

A little update on these guys numbers. Tommy was 311 @ 2:30 p.m. and 329 @ 4:45 p.m.. I gave tommy 1 unit of lantus and this mourning he was at 92, gave 1/2 unit. At 12:00 he was at 72 so I will more then likely give another 1/2 unit 4:45 p.m. today. Toby was 343 @ 2:30 p.m. and 299 @ 4:45 p.m., no dose tonight. This mourning toby was 298 @ 4:50 a.m. so I gave him 3/4 unit lantus. At 12:00 toby was at 153 so he will probably get another 3/4 dose. For tommy this sure is alot better then glipazide and for toby this sure is alot better then 5 units of pzi 2X a day. Hopefully, even if they cannot come totally off, it would be nice for them to stabilize at a low dose. They are getting plenty of XO, its pretty neet to watch their personalities open up and when they decide to seek you out for more attention.

Don,

Thank you for taking these sweet boys in and the other kitties that you've allowed into your heart. What a lucky family you have. Can't wait to hear how they blossom under your care.

toby and tommy are doing fine. toby does not want to come out of my room for long. I guess he feels safe with chubby and gus and whoever else comes in for the night. tommy likes staying out with everybody else. both guys have been hovering anywhere from 39 to the low two's and, have maintained on a 1/2 unit or less of lantus. just have to wait until there systems decide what they can or cannot do. then we can hopefully keep a steady dose going or none. toby is a butter ball who will not like a diet. a little at a time I guess. they both fit in so well, I could not believe it. the kittens let them know who they were though. herman tries to be a tuff boy, I hope he does not get to much bigger. I hope kiki stabilizes a little for you jennifer. she is a little sweetie and I know she is happy being with you guys. mr tucker will give in to her sooner or latter. I am glad you were able to make him comfortable.

I'm glad to hear your new boys are doing well. I'd love to post the same about Kiki, but she's having a tough transition. I think she may have an allergy, bare belly and inside her legs, she eats anything, especially loves people food, I'm not sure if it's food or stress. She came up with a full belly of fur and I don't think the shelter had her on a special diet.

She's also territorial, growling at any kitty who comes near her, she swiped at one of my seniors named Gett. It was bad for a while, but Bean seems fed up and has now started doing her best at breaking Kiki of the territorial stuff. Instead of leaving, Bean is staying near Kiki and showing her that she's not going to leave just because of a little growl. Bean even tried to play with her tail, which was met with a dirty look and not a swipe.

I admit to being worried for a short time about Tucker and Lilly Grace around Kiki, Lilly Grace cannot walk, she has severe CH, but Kiki seems to leave them alone. This is the first time I can recall having a kitty with territorial issues. When I adopted Sadie(GA) after she was surrendered to my vet, Sadie was mean to me, but not to the cats. I was thinking of using Feliway difusers, but the bare belly, possible allergy has me second guessing that idea.

There was even a day that I almost didn't test Kiki because she is so darn mean to me at test time, but after struggling and many test strips later, I did finally get the test. I'm not spot checking her much because she's being so difficult.

Any tips on helping Kiki realize that she doesn't have to be on guard all the time?

If you find a solution for Kiki, I need it for Tabitha. She growls and screams if any of my cats get within 2 feet of her. It is like a siren goes off. She is still eating by herself in a separate room.

Actually, Tabitha is reasonable about testing, just hates other cats. There isn't one in my house that she has liked, let alone bonded to.

She is very slowly heading to the falls. Then she can be adopted by the rescue group who found her.

I came home tonight and toby was down to 20. No hypo and acting just fine. Hurried and gave food and will just watch him. He has never gone down that far on .3 unit before (lantus). I will have to wait and see his numbers in the mourning and rethink his dosing. Nothing tonight thats for sure. tommy is still the silly kitty and doing ok. Sorry about kiki acting that way. I do not think it is territorial but, just being unfamiliar and unsure about everybody else and her surroundings. She may find comfort with your husband or you because thats all she has been around. But with your other guys will take some time. Some of my guys fit right in with no problems and, others, had to be gradually introduced. Camille for instance. walked right in like she owned the place and nobody dared mess with her. Now everybody plays with her.Toby and tommy the same way. As long as she is not messing with Lilly Grace I would just let her have her space and see how things unfold. Trust is never earned overnight. Be patient. Tommy will not let me give him his shot and will put up a defense. I have to put him into a carrier bottom and hold him down to give him his shot. Bg test no problem. Chubby now loves to be rubbed on but, for anything else you have to hold him firmly. Her possible allergy could be do to something in your house. Olivia and orangy had some scabing on their chins. I stopped using dryer sheets and changed luandry det. and it went away. Tabitha, I believe is just scared of the others in your house. When my orangy was outside and one of the males went after her, you would have thought they were all atacking her. I would run outside to find just one male picking on her. Now that I have brought her in, she has started playing ( late at night ) with chubby. If possible, you may need to give her her own space but dont isolate her. You will probably see a different kitty.

Jennifer, I know you've got your hands full but I think Reiki would might help this situation with Kiki. Have you ever looked into taking a class? I've seen it actually work with Boomer. I don't have solid evidence that it works remotely but I know it does if I do it in person for a specific situation. I'll bet it could work for behavior issues. I used it with Merlin to try to break him of his craziness in the bed at night. It helped I think, I don't have to put him out of the room now on most nights. Just a thought. I'd imagine it would be very tough to integrate a new cat who is territorial and mean to you.
