Traveling at Christmas

My Scamp was diagnosed in February, 2012 and OTJ in July - but mid November she is back to two units of Caninsulin (I know - but my vet is difficult about the type of insulin but great about everything else). I was supposed to fly to BC (from Alberta - 1 1/2 hour flight) and I may have to bring Scamp with me for Christmas.

She is a gem but she does get stressed traveling in a car and I expect a plane will be just terrifying for her. Can anybody give me an idea of how to deal with her on the trip??

What were your experiences the first time you took your fur baby(ies) on a trip?

Did anyone use drugs??

Any advice at all would be great!!!

And Thanks in advance,

Alix and Scamp

Hi Alix,

My Neko started on Caninsulin but fortunately a locum vet got me onto Lantus. You don't need a vets prescription in Canada if you want to change. I'm sticking with my vet because I like her for everything else. About some things, we are learning together. Your vet may have some suggestions for medications, but I'd try them before you leave to see how the cat reacts to it. I've heard of some meds making cats more hyper instead of calm.

I took my kitty on a car ride to Colorado in the summer - 24 hours on the road over 3 days each way. I thought she'd freak out the whole time as she wasn't even great going short distances. I got some Feliway spray (Petsmart) and sprayed the inside of her kennel and the car before we went. I also got some Rescue Remedy for Pets. That one is harder to find here, I'm only 40 minutes from the border so got it in the US. Try vitamin stores. A couple of drops in food before you leave can help relax the kitty. As I discovered, every cat is different about travel. Once we let Neko roam free in the car, she settled down right away. She still spent quite a bit of time snoozing in her carrier. I left it on the seat with the door open. For litter box, I have a sedan with split back seats so I put it in the trunk but she could still access it.

I had a choice of driving or flying, but chose to drive because then we could bring more stuff with us, like her favorite bed and fleece, litter box, scratching post. I also found it easier for taking along the insulin supplies. On a plane, you'll need to get a special note for carrying needles and insulin.

Another resource to check out is this supply list for traveling with a diabetic cat

Thanks Wendy & Neko,

Great information - I did not realize that I could change Scamp's insulin without my vet's okay - he is a fantastic vet and he is actually not worried about me - he told me just yesterday that i know all about what I am doing with Scamp (clearly not true but that made me feel good!!) I know he actually carries Rescue Remedy - so I can pick up a bottle!! I have travelled by car with Scamp and while she doesn't like it - she really does okay. It's just a big thing going through the airport - I am going to Qualicum Beach for only 5 days so it is not practical to drive! I was planning to take a big suitcase anyway - so I will be able to take all her stuff!! - Good point about the needles and the insulin - that sort of crossed my mind but ...

Thanks so much,

Alix & Scamp
