Nicole & Baby

I came home this afternoon from work & Sadi acted fine, up & down 15 stairs, ate dinner, activity & litterbox all in order. I went to rub her chin & she hissed at me - I felt along her lower jaw line & felt a lump on the right side - I immediately got her to the vet within 30 minutes. No bite marks No cancerous cells detected, a slightly elevated white blood cell count present after lancing & viewing sample under microscope. Physical exam show reddening of the gums on the right side (no blood), the lump on the right side of her jaw & right back pain (to touch) Vets best guess was a possible fall/landing on the right side today? I did mention to her that a maintenance man was over today & she suspected that maybe Sadi got startled & fell? Without any bite wounds or anything.. she said her best guess is trauma. She gave her Bupe for pain for a few days & we both thought it was a good idea to start an antibiotic to beat any infection if it was a cat fight between her & Baby. She said she could do xrays - but since Sadi was walking & going up/down stairs fine that she did not know if we could tell anything. We are home & have pain meds and antibiotic down - still acting fine & eating.

No blood. No drainage. Nothing but this little lump on the right side & her fur came out there when the vet rubbed her.
Dental done last month, blood work great & weight the same.

What do you guys think? I am saddened for her.. I have never seen her fall or anything.

Re: Trauma?

Fell on her mouth? I wonder if mataniance man accidently hit her with something.
Can't imagine falling on her face. Cats know how to fall. They are very good at it.
Be careful with the bupe...Tom is on it and it makes him super strange.

Re: Trauma?

Thanks, Lori.. I dunno.. but :?
I am waiting for the stoned strangeness.. gave her 1 dose & she is acting fine? I only have enough for twice a day two days. Vet said they would give more if necessary.
She said it was like morphine & it would make her pupils dilated, her sleepy & to confine her to an area without stairs, etc - so she wouldn't lose her balance and fall. I will watch for it to kick in.. but nearly 3 hours now & Sadi is normal :?:
hugs to you & Tom.

CrAzY kitties sure know how to scare us :YMSIGH:

My thought too, I wondered if the maintenance man hit her or kicked at her or something. The other thing is maybe she got startled and bumped her face on something as she was running away.

Good luck, I hope she feels better soon!

Re: Trauma?

how old is Sadi? i'm wondering if her and Baby play at all or she plays by herself? two of my boys chase each other around the house at breakneck speeds and they do occasionally do a face plant into the stairs as they misjudge them and think they can do them all in 2 leaps at 30mph but somehow they just don't get it right sometimes and i have to grab them and check to make sure they haven't broken their teeth. wondering if maybe something like that could have happened?

and fwiw, i've had some get stoned on bupe and others whom have never had a reaction at all while on it.

Re: Trauma?

Thanks, everyone. She is 10 & so is Baby.. they both have been together their entire life - but are not as close as I want them to be - they fuss & fight more than necessary ohmygod_smile
I did ask if maybe the maintenance man hit her or kicked her.. of course she did not know & I knew that.. but she said her best guess was no.. that if it happened he would have hit her jaw or back once & she would have ran, not stuck around and with sensitivity/pain to touch in few areas she felt it was a fall or ran into something when startled. She does get very startled easily & always hides under my comforter when strangers come around.. the comforter was messed up today (like it is when she hides) I think she either fell or she got so startled.. she ran into something trying to hide.
He has been over here numerous times over the past few years & we have never had this happen, so I would like to think I can trust him.. but from this point forward he will not enter unless I am home.
Thanks again everyone, I pray she is ok & am going to give her some more bupe to help her through the night if she is in pain. Good to know Bupe affects different kitties differently. But she is playing now too.. no sign of anything wrong.. but that lump/bump is present :YMSIGH:

Re: Trauma?

I'm sorry to read this Nicole. I'm glad she's acting okay and wishing the antibiotics and pain meds have her back to 100% soon.

Re: Trauma?

Thank you so much, Karrie.. the not knowing is hard.. feel bad for her :YMSIGH:
Appreciate your support & kind words.

I took a pic & added it.. it is a hard boil - lanced twice but no liquid or pus inside? I dunno.. she is still acting completely fine.

awww .. sadi what happened sweet girl? I'm sorry she has this sore going on .. Glad you got her to the vet and checked out and doing the pain meds .. hoping for a quick recovery for your sweet girl!

Oh my thats bigger than I thought it would be. Was she able to tell if it was infection or she thinks it is trauma? And why the hair loss?

I know with cats with feline acne if they get an infection there is hair loss.

Yes, Nicole...why the hair loss? A bump or trauma should not cause the fur to fall out. Did vet shave it?
Is it growing?
Poor Baby, wish I could give her a big sweet hug and a snuggle.
Keep us updated k?
Lori

When she touched the fur it was warm a "hot spot" from talking to her.. if there is infection then hair loss can happen - today I touched around it & fur stays. I talked to my mom, she said her dog once had an infection around her tail & the hair came out in a patch. She could not say for sure trauma.. her & Baby might have got into it.. but there were no bite marks - so she leaned towards a fall or running into something from being startled. Yikes.. I dunno.. but love & appreciate all of you!

It looks like there are some puncture marks. I wonder if she and Baby got into it and she got bit or scratched. My guess is it looks more like a cat wound than a people causing wound.

the fact that it's hot says to me, infection - I would put some warm compresses on it and see if it helps and you may want to start a round of antibiotics just to play it safe.

I agree.. she was proactive & gave us an antibiotic, so we have 2 doses down.. I am going to do warm compresses to.. thank you to each of you :YMHUG:

When most of my cats have an injury such as a fight, run into something, just 'be' cats, and end up with a small sore that gets infected underneath, exactly what you have is what I have. The fever in the sore kills the hair - it then comes off as a whole patch. 2 of 'my' (actually neighbor's but they don't know what 'love' means) cats have this occur every few months. Usually takes antibiotics to be sure it's all gone....GOOD JOB!
