Hello I'm a new member,

My cat newly diagnosed and I am transitioning from mostly dry food to wet. Is it normal that he wants to eat wet food every two hours when he's awake? I feed him when he wants it. I stopped the dry althogether because he just had blood in his urine and got antibiotics, urine is normal now. Thanks

The wet food does not have the bulk of dry food and therefore not the "full up feeling". You will also be noticing less fecal matter in the LB, not as much filler.

An unregulated diabetic cat is unable to efficiently process the food, and is usually very hungry, so he's eating more to get the nutrition he needs.

When you get your insulin, and start him out this is the beginning of getting his blood sugar regulated, and hopefully his need to eat so much, so often will lessen.

We do tend to feed our sugar cats smaller, more frequent meals at this helps balance the blood sugar and gives the unregulated cats what they need.

Idjit gets 2 oz of raw/supplement 3 X a day, and a small canned portion at bedtime. He also gets a raw chicken wing part or gizzard a couple of times a week, plus treats of cooked chicken breast or thigh. He's a big boy and kind of a glutton though, and incredibly spoiled.

Hi and welcome!
Are you testing the urine for ketones at the moment?
FD cats, especially if they have not been started on insulin, or have an infection or not eating well can develop ketones, so if I were you, would go out and buy a bottle of Ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy and test Neville. It is a simple test. Just collect a sample of his urine, dip the test strip into the urine and read it exactly 15 seconds later against the colours on the bottle.
Anything above a trace needs vet attention. Ketones can lead to the much more serious DKA,but if you are testing then they can be dealt with before this happens. He may well not have them but it's a very good test to monitor with FD cats.

Have you started. To do any testing?
If you need any help with it, just yell and we will help you.
Great you have the SS up and your signature done!!

Do you know when you are starting the insulin?
Good insulins for cats are Lantus, levemir and Prozinc.....all longer acting, gentler insulins..

Hi Bron, I am not testing for ketones. Ketostixs sound like I should have those on hand.
He's let me BG test for the past 3 days he seems okay with it as long as he gets his treat.
His doc wants to see him this week to see if LC diet brings BG down before starting insulin.

Those numbers are pretty good.
If you can get some tests in before food and then get a few tests in about 2 to 3 hours later. If the BG goes down that will mean the pancreas is working a bit at least.
Are you feeding much dry?
That will raise the BG
