Hi everyone:
As of 12/15/17 I am transitioning my cat from gyco balance to fancy feast classics. Here are some questions that I have: ( see SS to referance to numbers, thank u)

1- how often should I monitor him over the weekend?
2 he tends to go under my bed, should I keep my door closed god forbid he drops dangerously low.
3- what can I purchase for him to snack on;given I can’t afford to get young again this month bring it is Christmas time?

If you have leftover of glyco, I would mix 1/3 FF with it a couple days. Then progress a little more each day until you are feeding all FF. By the weekend or by Christmas Day you should be done. My vet said & I’ve read that any food change should be done gradually. That is whether a cat is diabetic or not... good luck & I sure hope he likes it! I’ll bet it’s cheaper & that’s a concern for me as well! :cat:

What guidelines should I use with the BG readings, should I stay to 1.5?
When should I see a decrease in the BG given food switch? Will it take a couple of cycles to see any difference in numbers? I am asking because I started the fancy feast and haven’t seen numbers go down yet, they have gone up a bit. Could this be because I am mixing the gyco balance with the fancy feast to gradually and get rid of gyco balance all together? Unfortunately I have a 4lb bag of gyco balance to use up

I’m not sure about the glycol balance, but I know Hills will refund your money on their food, even after it’s been opened. You just say your cat won’t eat it.
If you’re around and testing, you should be able to catch any dropping numbers and give him some food to slow him down. You can post here if you need help with that. It will take a few days after all dry food is stopped to really see how well the food change will work, though the more FF and less dry you may see some lowering.

I will have to check with chewy.com, thanks

i am so frustrated as marmalades numbers continue to climb with the food change, am I expecting too much too soon? He is eating all of the fancy feast, 3 ounces and I have some gyco balance, 1/3 cup. His usual portion before the switch was 1/2 cup of gyco balance.
Do us think I should increase the insulin to 2 units right away or keep him at 1.5 for now?

Can anyone help me out with these questions, as posted above

I went down because I was afraid he would bottom out as we were just start upping the fancy feast, I’m not sure if I am thinking about the correlation to the fancy feast and BG levels

I’m getting really confused again about the affect of insulin in terms of high BG levels, would high BG levels require more or less insulin?

Vetsulin is often dosed on a sliding scale....the higher the BG, the larger the dose, but I've never used it so I'm not qualified to advise you on a specific scale to use for Marmalade

You might try editing your subject line and saying something like "Sliding scale dose for Vetsulin"??

Some cats do better with consistent dosing, but sliding scales can be helpful for others. ECID comes into play.

I wouldn't worry too much about the transition....as long as you're testing, you'll be able to catch if the reduction in carbs requires a reduction in dose

K, have I gone backwards? Should I go to 2 units starting tomorrow morning, Saturday? Of course I will keep on monitoring as much as I can this weekend and week

I would up it to 2 units starting tomorrow. Can't really give a sliding scale yet until we see what it takes to get into lower numbers. So 2 units this weekend and we'll see what effect that plus the lower carb food makes.

Getting down to 230 is better. Stick with 2 units another few days and then we'll see if it's good or needs another raise.

@mary hornbeck
that high number this morning is a bounce... it will go down as he gets used to those lower numbers. You should start a new thread for dosing help as this one started out as questions about food changes. it may get more eyes on it.

@mary hornbeck those blues are looking nice at +4 last night and +6 today! Progress!
Thanks Adam, I was scared this morning when I got my highest BG as of yet. My cat even started rolling on my floor in his back today, he hasn’t done that in forever.. you were absolutely correct switching foods should of been done a long time ago. My cat just seems happier overall.
