Houdini's stomatitus has flared up again and I wont give him another depo shot, so while we wait to see a vet dentist the vet gave me tramadol to ease the pain. I dont want to dope him silly she told me at first a half pill twice a day but the label said 1/4 pill twice a day. The bottle didnt say pill strength so i googled it and the whole is 50mg and 1/4 would be 12.5mg. I gave him one yesterday evening after his late meal and he seamed fine he was even very 0playful this morning, but he wasnt real hungry for his breakfast which was a first, he ate his midday meal meal fine though is suppressed appetite a side effect in cats in tramadol anyone have some experience with their sugar cat. I also dont wanna let him get constipated his tummy is a bit sensitive at times cant keep track of all there BM's

I have used tramadol (1/4 of 50 mg tab) with no problems. Sometime a side effect of an opioid (tramadol is a synthetic opioid) is constipation but none of my cats experienced that. Many cats become agitated, nervous and anxious with tramadol but none of mine did.

I give Sheba 10 mg of Tramadol twice a day for arthritis. I think 12.5 mg would be fine. My tablets are 20 mgs so it is easier to just cut in half. It does not effect her appetite or her bowels. She has shown no signs of being agitated or anxious on the tramadol.

Thanks for the input guys he doesnt seem to have negative side effects at 1/4 tablet, if I could only get him to take the pill, he didnt care for the pill pockets, he seemed to smell it out when i crushed it up into his wet food, I had to open his mouth and throw it down the hatch so to speak I didnt care for that but I know hes in pain, the vet said she could give me the liquid buprine would be easier to give, the things we do for our fur babys

I place my solid meds in a gel cap and use a pill gun. Tramadol and some other meds are bitter.
The tramadol fits in a #5 gelcap. I usually use #3 since I can get other meds in the same gelcap

I also put Sheba's tramadol in a gelcap and put it in her mouth. It is very bitter and she froths at the mouth if she has it straight. She takes all other meds well so it is definitely the tramadol which is unpleasant.
