got tom a couple of cans..for cats..can't find a carb count.
thinking tuna must be low.

It's 2 carbs on Janet and Binky's charts. I use TJ tuna as a little flavor addition to the cats' regular food for a treat or if I'm trying to get them to try something new. I also use it to make tuna ice cubes that Dr. P. suggests on her website. They sure do love the TJ tuna. It's super stinky!!!!

thank you! are you saying you don't think it's fit as a full meal on it's own?

I'm pretty sure the TJ's cat food is balanced to provide full nutrition vs treat quality. It should say on the can - if its not suitable to be fed as 100% of their diet it will have some sort of message about how its for occaisional feeding vs regular meals.

That being said many people limit tuna to a treat to make sure their cats don't get too much of it. How much is too much is a personal decision, everyone has their own ideas on that. Some people also save it for when cats NEED to eat and are being either finicky or having appetite issues. At our house we limit it to 1 meal (Friday night dinner usually) a week plus treats, although sometimes they get a tuna & some other flavor fish meal once a week also. Or if somebody is under the weather and needs some encouragement to eat.

Check the ingredient list and the label very carefully. If the ONLY ingredient is 100% tuna, maybe some water for processing, then no, the food is not nutrionally complete. If vitamins and minerals are included in the list, then the food is nutrionally complete. There is a teeny tiny sentance on the label that either says that the food is a complete diet OR for supplemental feeding only.

Merrick Before Grain canned can be either supplement or complete. I saw some of the old 100% formulas supplemental only cans at the pet store yesterday right alongside the new 96% formulas that are nutrionally complete. Always double check the label before you buy

Seafood should only be fed once in awhile as treats. Some cats get addicted to eating only seafood. Seafood is also high inphosphorus which can be hard on the kidneys. Tuna can contain mercury as well.

I'm pretty sure it's a complete meal, but I limit how much fish my cats can have. They usually only eat chicken or turkey.

This is what I read about seafood varieties:
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame-retardant industrial chemicals. PBDEs are found in particularly high concentrations in fish that are high up the food chain and, therefore, in sea food flavor cat foods. Could be linked to feline hyperthyroidism.

They sure do love the TJ tuna, though!!!!

ok folks, the can does report suppliments of vitamines and such included..and just so you know tom only gets his seafood twice a week. i know it's not good to give it all the time. he eats rabbit, seafood, beef and chicken, (beef alone does not agree with him and makes his eyes cry), turkey, and chicken. all ff, occasionally other brands. but rarely. he does not like left overs so the ff can is the perfect size for him.
