Toronto area - surrendering a cat

I'm writing this for a coworker - I'm trying to help her find a home for her 2 year old newly adopted cat.

Some background - she adopted Pheonix from petsmart at the beginning of August. They didnt really give her much background info but she assumes the cat was a stray. She's had vet checks and has a clean bill of health but Pheonix keeps peeing everywhere. Sometimes in the box, sometimes not. My coworker has tried everything to rectify this but nothing is working so far. I know it's only been a month, but my coworker said she just can't deal with it. She's upset about giving her up but says she just can't handle it. There is no talking her out of it. Petsmart said they would euthanize her if she was brought back. All the no kill shelters are not taking in cats right now. Her vet said it may just be behavioural issues.

Can anyone help me, help her find a place for this kitty??

I have ideas

but I have some ideas try ALL these

1. check with Petsmart as to what litter they were using. He might not like the new stuff - if they dont know .. switch it to unscented if the current stuff is scented or buy a variety and try a few different types
2. Buy natures miracle and clean all the pee spots really really well.
3. Buy a feliway air thingy and that might calm him down - could be stress from new house.
4. If there are repeated use of peespots then put litter boxes there or buy the pesmart cat deterrant sprays ( motion sensitive gas canisters) and put them there to stop him peeing in those spots.
5. Also take him to the vet and check for a UTI

If that doesnt all work then shut him in a small bathroom with a litterbox and food/water. Do not let him out until he is using the litterbox consistently. Could take a week. Then slowly increase access to the house and put him back if he has an accident.

here is a list I compiled previously. Some of the items may not apply (like gender!)

You might try an integrated approach using multiple options from the list below on a consistent basis:

* start with crating, using a medium large crate (30" long is big enough for cat and a litterbox) until progress. She probably won't go where she'd have to lie in it ... but if she does, something is wrong and it may be medical.

* tarps and newspapers may be easier on clean up if you don't crate her

* feeding on a schedule and then placing her in the litterbox (maybe in a crate) within 15-20 minutes after eating, until she goes, then praising and letting her out.

* Feliway/Comfort Zone - friendly facial pheromones which reduce stress and may reduce marking behavior. Cheapest prices are usually on the net (ex http://www.LambertVetSupply.com ) I've used it and it helps.

* Cat Attract litter - supposed to help attract cat to litter box

* rule out arthritis or constipation - pain causes box avoidance

* watch if the other cats ever attack her in the box and if so, you may need to keep her separated from them. I've got one the others attack, completely unprovoked.

* littebox should be 1.5 times length of cat, litter cleaned frequently, but avoid really strong smelling cleaners as cats may avoid them due to the scent.

* you've got to get residual odors out from areas which were 'nailed' - Nature's Miracle is one option and has good reviews. It _can_ require repeated applications.

* regular play sessions of about 15 minutes to reduce stress and promote bond with you

* reward desirable behaviors - if you see her use the box, praise and treat her

* put unpleasant textures in places she has peed to encourage avoidance

Unfortunately, her decision to give up Pheonix is certain. She thinks tomorrow morning she will take her back to the place she got her from and they will euthanize her. They already told her that!
