Too low to shoot... did I do the right thing?

Boo dropped very low last night, then bounced to an ugly high this morning, then moderated nicely during the day, but finished too low to shoot at her regular time. In fact I was so shocked at the PMPS number that I tested her again and it was indeed too low to shoot. I fed her and waited 2 hours (maybe too long?) She shot up to 393, I shot her with .4 (I had been dosing her at 1.2). Did I do the right thing? Should I have not fed her? I also didn't know how to record her numbers since there isn't a column for +12. So I put that number in the +11 column.
 
She did jump right up. Waiting the 2 hours after feeding is fine. The number should no longer be influenced by food by then. It may mess with your shot tomorrow if you have to shoot 12 hours from this one. If she is real high, you might shoot earlier.

Your other alternative with a low pre shot is to not feed her, wait 20 minutes and test. If she is rising and high enough to shoot, then you can dose.

I'd say the 1.2 may be too much. Your 0.4 may be too little. But regardless you'll get some good data to help you next time.
 
Thanks Sue! When you say that you think 1.2 may be too much.... are you referring to tonight's dose or do you mean that the past several doses at that level is too much? Boo's test results makes me wonder how people who don't test manage their kittie's diabetes. This is scary stuff.
 
The 1.2 on a high amps gave you an unshootable pmps. so I am thinking a little less for that range next time would be good. Not a lot less, just a little. Your 0.4 tonight looks fine, maybe a little light, but it may be fine and will give you info for the next time.

I agree. The vet who posts here described shooting insulin without testing is like driving down the freeway with a bag over your head. Great analogy.
