I just put our 10 year old cat down from diabetes complications. In hindsight, it should have been very obvious - he showed all the classic symptoms for 3-4 weeks. But I just procrastinated too long, and by the time we took him to the emergency vet he was on death's door - couldn't move, meow, etc. And the estimated costs were $2000+. We'll never know if we made the right decision (it's certainly kept me up at nights), but I found this site afterward and it seems like a really nice support group. Keep it up.

If anyone's curious about the details, our cat was small and only about 1 lb overweight, and he'd been on prescription dry food for most of his life. For those reasons, the vets we've talked to have all cited genetics, so we'll definitely be vigilant regarding his 3 siblings.
 
Please don't second guess youself - you made the best decision you could at the time and wanted to do right by your kitty.

Because you've got the siblings, please continue your reading. Especially go to http://catinfo.org and read about feline nutrition. You may decide to make some changes for them.
 
I am very sorry for the loss of your kitty.

Please, for the sake of your other kitties, consider a canned-food diet.

Though some cats are more prone to diabetes than others, the biggest cause
of diabetes in cats is a dry food diet.

May all your best memories of your kitty comfort you...

I'm so sorry for your loss. You did the very best you knew to do with the knowledge you had. You gave your kitty a life-time of love and happiness.

Regarding the siblings, perhaps if you can change them to a low carbohydrate canned food diet, that may help their continued health?

Any way, I understand the pain of the loss you have suffered. May God bring you comfort and peace.
 
Please don't berate yourself. He was a very sick cat. He apparently went down hill faster than most. You did the best you could, I am sure.

As others have said, do consider switching to canned. It has made a huge difference for MY cat and I thank whatever guided me to this group.
 
Please come back and let us know how you and the siblings are doing. Like the others said you did the best you could with what you had. Bingley knows that.

I'm so very sorry that you've lost your kitty. I know the pain you're in... and hope you'll let go of any thoughts of "What If".... However, I would suggest you drop the expensive DRY food for his siblings and get them on low carb canned food. We have a listing, Janet and Binky's Food list that shows the Carb Content of Cat foods, about every brand...

I feed my boys low carb Fancy Feast and it is what is keeping my Stevie a diet controlled diabetic. My little Charlie required insulin from age 12 to 18, when he passed from a stroke... but he had six wonderful active years with diabetes...

We've found that cats are becoming diabetic in record numbers as they eat dry food.... Cats are obligate carnivores and require meat not grain..

I hope you'll read this poem I wrote years ago and that it helps you. I had to read it over and over after I let my Charlie go ahead.

I am sorry for the loss of your kitty.
I recently had to do the same thing with my 11 yr old kitty because of major diabetes complications.
