Toms runny poop

Thanks Donna for helping me to re register! My question is that Tom has very soft unformed poop . Has been going on for probably the last month. Could it be because he is now solely on wet food and no biscuits? It's smelly too!

Food changes can cause GI upsets, though by 1 month, I'd expect those to be calming down.
Simple experiment is to add a probiotic such as Forti Flora or Intelliflora, or 1-2 teaspoons of plain yougurt with active cultures (if not dairy sensitive) to see if that helps.

If that doesn't, you'll need a vet visit.

Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) can cause damage to digestive enzyme formation which then results in soft, foul-smelling feces, usually a somewhat light pasty color. This is called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and is treated with digestive enzymes. While there are some products over the counter, you really should have a proper diagnosis before starting these.

Bacterial overgrowth syndromes and parasites may result in stinky stool/diarrhea. Fresh fecal specimens may help in diagnosing this, so find out what your vet wants you to do.

Hiya,

Were you and Tom previously registered under a different user name?
(Just wondering if we can look at previous posts to find out your history instead of hitting you with a (well-meaning but very enthusiastic) battery of questions about Tom!) ;-)

There had been a hiccup with my registration previously but this is my first post. Thank you for responses . We are seeing the vet next Tuesday so I think I shall take a sample with me. I was worried it may be something g other than diet after this amount of time. Is pancreatitis treatable with full recovery?

I have also in the middle of the night heard him throwing up but there is no sick, it may just be fur ball as he is mounting but could this also be relevant to pancreatitis?

Whats his weight like? Is he losing weight? What about appetite? Is he diabetic?

My Bailey has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency which when untreated leads to large fluffy smelly stools. Sometimes 2-3 times a day. Pale coloured. And he would eat tons and lose weight.

But there are many causes for soft stools including infections and bacteria and parasites. Your vet can rule those out.

Hi, He is diabetic since Jan 2014, He loves his food and has lost weight but he was overweight so has been on a diet. He is fed low carb wet only.

Did the runny poop happen after the food change? he might not be able to tolerate this food - might want to try another low carb type.

Well, before diagnosis in Jan he had been doing pale fluffy splodges, then ( until I joined this group) I was feeding him hills w/d canned / dry. Poop then became normal. Then went onto low carb / no dry and was fine for a time then in last few wks back to splashes again. He has various different brands so he does not get bored. And now today typing this he has been back to normal for last couple days. Perhaps feeding different brands is the cause perhaps??

Tracking it on your spreadsheet - what you feed, and when there are symptoms, may help. Keep in mind it can take some time for things to move through the GI tract, so consider the previous day's intake for the current day's symptoms.

That's a good idea :-D I was thinking of putting him back on Felix jelly which is under 10% carb and what's he's eaten all his life with no problem and then maybe bringing back in the really low carb/ raw one by one ?

Spoke to soon. After poops being normal for last few days, came home to a small piece of sloppy poop on bathroom floor. I'm sure it was Tom and not his brother. He's very well though , eating n playing. Anyways we have a vet appt tomorrow so will keep u posted guys. ;-)

:-D Tom's pre shot test was 11.5. The vet has reduced him to 1 unit BID while we wait for fructosamine results. Really hope we are heading to remission... we both agreed that the poop situation is most probably diet as he is so well. So going back to felix (8%) to see if this settles it and re introduce lower carb feeds one by one to see what may be upsetting his tummy. :-D

Very well thanks, we went back to his old food of Felix of which using the carb calculator is under 2% carbs and poopy all back to normal. Also his pre shot numbers are coming down, he has been reduced to 1 unit insulin bid and is better on this dose as on 2 units bid he was getting very hungry +5 hours and now he has a snack instead of binging . His fructosamine levels were improved too so hoping we are heading for remission with this diet. Thanks again ;-)

thats great - but i hope you got some mid cycle tests to make sure he didn't drop too low! remember dosing etc is based on mid cycle tests so be sure to get those . if he drops under 2.8 then he gets a dose decrease. What kind of insulin are you using?

I usually recommend 3-4 tests a day

- always before the shot - this is mandatory as you don't want to shoot when too low. As a newbie this too low number is 11 but is reduced over time once you have the data to know if its safe.
- mid cycle - 5-7 hours after morning shot depending on your schedule. This is to see how low the cat’s blood sugar is going. The low point "nadir" is what you base dose changes on since you don't want the cat dropping too low (under 2.8).
- before bed (2-3hours after Pm shot) to get an idea of what the cat's overnight plans are. If this number is less than the pre shot test number you may want to set the alarm for a test a few hours later as this implies an active cycle.
