Tom turned 18 this summer, OTJ since May 2008. However, we are having serious challenges right now.

Blood work came back yesterday, in general not so bad for a kitty his age. CRF has not progressed too much since March. Also confirms still OTJ. We will be starting pred. this weekend.
But now, he needs to eat. We are feeding him ANYTHING that he will eat. And yes, that includes dry. And lots of tasty treats. We need him to get enough nutrients in his body to survive and allow the pred to (hopefully) do something.

So, back to regular testing and if we have to, we'll be back here for monitoring and your support.

Please send all the positive vibes you can.

Let him eat what ever he likes! *if* his BGs go up you know what to do. We are all here to support you

Sonja I'm sorry for not seeing the link to health. Big hugs for you and Tom. There are a couple of members that have dealt with SCC on the Feline Assisted Feeding forum. I believe one cat had it not grow back. I will search the archives for you and post back.

I'm so sorry to hear about Tom's diagnosis. Under the circumstances, one of the benefits of the pred may be that it will increase Tom's appetite.
 
I searched the archives and one of our knowledgeable and active members (writing a book on cat/GI system)... Helen posted this:

"Having said that we did use metacam with Demi for about six months at a very
reduced rate despite her having liver disease. She had squamous cell carcinoma
on her tongue and some research suggested that it and piroxicam slowed down the
tumour's growth. It was a calculated risk, because this tumour is 99.99% fatal
and I was trying to buy her time. I knew the risk but decided that the benefits
in her case might outweigh them. My vet only prescribed half recommended dose
rate and we were already doing routine tests to monitor her liver and when it
started effecting her we discontinued its use. Much to our surprise the tumour
remained in remission. She is one of the few SCC cats I have heard of world wide
to survive (almost 5 years post dx)

Her son dxd with the same tumour but different location, did not survive despite
us being much more aggressive although we decide not to risk piroxicam/metacam
due to his stage three kidney disease. I can't say if the metacam had an effect
on Demi's cancer but luckily it didn't affect her longevity either. That she
might be cured was not an option either of us considered or we might have been
more caution."

Karrie, vet pulled up some research on SCC treatment using Meloxicam or Piroxicam. Vet also mentionned something else over the phone last night which I have in my notes at home, can't remember the name right now.
All of this is just foreign to me, have to do a lot more reading to even begin to understand what any of them do :?

As you posted, SCC has a very grim prognosis. We are immediately starting pred and see if he responds to that while continuing to look at all options.
 
Hi guys ... I'm sorry to hear about tom's SCC .. I hope that the pred makes him want to eat and if his bg's go up, you know we will all be here for you .. thoughts and prayers being sent your way ..
