I noticed Jackson has very long, thick toenails. I trimmed them some, but I think they probably need more trimming. Anyone have any guidance for trimming nails without hurting your cat? I’m afraid of hurting him or inadvertently causing an infection by trimming too much.

I assume his neuropathy makes him more susceptible to infection and less able to wear down his nails with normal walking.

I use cat specific nail clippers only, and make sure to stay away from the pink. If you do hit it, grab some corn starch to stop bleeding. If Jackson is very good with his nails being done, go ahead and clip the thinnest portion of nail off, and if he has any "nail sheath" left, you can pull it off with fingernails. I often clio just enough tip to loosen sheath, then pull it off and clip proper. My singies always chew their nails and pull them off, but Rhubarb never does. That sheath may be what is making the nail look so thick. I may not have the right word for it, but you likely see fragments of it when you clean near scratch post. Afaik, most indoor cats don't wear their nails down from walking. Rhubarb's don't touch the floor when she walks.
