Todd Has Something Else Wrong.. (Horner's Syndrome)

So yesterday I noticed the 3rd eyelid on Todd's left side was sticking out a bit. It wasn't red or weeping. I called the vet and was going to take him in yesterday, but had an emergency to deal with and couldn't. When I arrived home, his 3rd eyelid was sticking out more, about halfway across his eye, but not bothering him. I took him to our vet first thing this morning to see what it was.

I had already looked up eye issues and had a feeling it was Horner's Syndrome. The vet confirmed that it was indeed Horner's. But no clear answer on what is causing it. She checked his ear on that side and found some wax, but no mites or polyps that she could see. The eardrum looked good. She did note a little drainage deep down in there, and also when cleaning out his ears or looking in with the scope, he would start scratching like crazy at his ear. He was not doing this at home.. however, I did tell the vet that when we scratched his neck in just the right spot on that side, he would scratch a bit. I showed her where and she said that was the deeper part of the ear canal. She thinks (and we hope) he might have a middle ear infection, which can cause this. It could also be a polyp or tumor or something pressing on the large nerve. They have him right now, because she wants to do an X-ray to double check it all looks good. She is also going to start Todd on an antibiotic. I don't know which one, but she wants to give him a shot, which she says lasts two weeks. If this is a middle ear infection, she said he will need to be on antibiotics for about 6 weeks. So he'll need the shot again in two weeks and then again two weeks after that. Todd will probably be happier with the shot, since he is not a fan of pills or liquids. So it's probably a better choice..

Has anyone had a cat with Horner's or with a middle ear infection? I'm so worried it's something worse than that.

Also, I know for a few weeks now, his WBC has been high, but the specialist we have been seeing said it was nothing and to do nothing about it. Can a middle ear infection cause high WBC? I assume so.

I'm sorry, I am of no help on the Horner's Syndrom. I can tell you that the shot is called covenia, and there are several potential concerns with using it. Please search this forum for discussions on the topic covenia, as Dr Lisa has posted several concerns with using it. My takehome message from the discussions was that if there is another antibiotic available that would work for the infection in question, use it instead....

My now-departed (GA?) cat, Mandu, developed Horner's syndrome apparently from a really bad reaction to ear-cleaning fluid. I can't offer much help, but here are a couple of comments:

1. Your vet is right to check him carefully to eliminate other, non-infection possibilities.
2. In Mandu's case, it took a long, long time for the Horner's to resolve, but he didn't seem much bothered by it.

I cat sat for a lady on here and shortly thereafter this happened to him. according to a vet tech that frequented the board, this will be self resolving in a few weeks. no treatment was needed. it went away on its own.
I am sure if you looked it up, it tells you what is happening. I cannot remember what that was right now and am too lazy to look it up
 
So are there any signs I should look for in Todd, if he had convenia?... Which is looks as though he did. He seems fine right now. Been snoozing off and on all day, ate, had his shot and such. He seems ok. But of course, now I'm all worried. Once the two weeks has passed, I'll see if they can switch him to a different antibiotic.


So again, anything I should watch for?...


Also, he has yeast in both ears, so I was given some drops for that. The vet said the Horner's SHOULD go away on it's own in a few weeks, especially if we take care of the yeast and infection (possible infection).

Todd seems just fine today and last night. He's in a very good mood, considering he hasn't had his Mirtazapine yet. heh

It appears to be alright with him so far, but I'll keep watching just in case.
