I can't believe we've been at this for 9 years !! Today, Bert is 18 and knock fur, he is a healthy happy boy :)

The first couple of years were pretty tough and very scary. I was always worried that Bert would overdose on insulin.
Because of this board, Bert is still with me today.

Thank you to all of the wonderful people who helped me through so many crisis. The vets didn't have a clue about Feline Diabetes. The prescription they gave me was DRY WD food and 4 units of insulin. NO testing ! ! Bert got Ketones, over and over again. Once again, they had no clue and neither did I.

It took so may hospitalizations and thousands of dollars before Rosemary (a wonderful member of this board 9 years ago) suggested it might be idiopathic cystitis.
She suggested I call a holistic vet. I did and the vet prescribed a Chinese Herb over the phone. She never even met Bert !!
I picked up the tablets at her office and Bert never got Ketones again.

Bert got the Calici Virus. The conventional vet told me he needed to be hospitalized or he probably wouldn't make it. I knew by then I could take care of him with Rosemary's advice. OMG, he had sores in his mouth, down his throat and on his lips and nose.

Then Pancreatitis showed up. Bert didn't eat for 4 days ! ! The vets said he needed to be hospitalized and my answer again was, "no way." Once again, Rosemary was there to hold my cyber hand.
4 vets told me not to give insulin if he wasn't eating. Not only did I give him insulin, I supplemented with a fast acting insulin to keep his glucose down. I gave him fluids every 12 hours. My biggest fear was Ketones and fattly liver. One of the reasons for Ketones is when they don't eat. Well, no Ketones. No food for 4 days, just fluids and some homeopathic tablets. Once again we proved the vets wrong.

5 years ago he was diagnosed with hyper-T and has been on Tapazole ever since.

I just want to say to anyone who is starting on the Feline Diabetic journey, Never Give Up.
Listen to people on this board who deal with this disease every day. I took the advice from the people on this board because they had so much knowledge and experience that the vets didn't have.

To this day, Bert doesn't see a vet for diabetes. They've never even heard about the insulin he's on, Levemir. I take him in for blood work, that's it.

Thank you Rebecca for this board and to all of the wonderful people who were here 9 long years ago that taught me so much. I see some of them still posting here today. Because of all of you Bert is still with me.

Keep up the good work FDMB.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Felice and my boy Bert ^..^

((((((((((((((((((((FELICE)))))))))))))))))))))))) Yay for you and Bert! Long time no see!

Congrats and Happy Annifursary ov da direbeasties!!! Tunaritas all around!!

Nice to know that you feel the same way I do as I am sure many many other do!
I am a fairly newbie and I CANNOT DO WITHOUT THIS SITE!!!!
Not only did everyone help me get my Sugar Bean in remission in just over 1 month, but have helped me in so many other ways with my other girls....This site helped me with my heart patient & CRF Gumpy; helped me emotional when she went to the bridge (7/15). Has helped me with my civvie Slappy (15 yrs.) when she was not eating, sending me Patricia (wonderful lady) to help teach me how to burrito and syringe/dropper feed, which I am still doing, just able to do it on my own!!! Confirmed that if I wanted to add an alien to my group so soon after Gumpy passed ~ it was ok, and now we have Lil Sista!
They have offered advice for me to give my cousin 5 hours away to help her friend with home testing her sugar baby too.
I am now crying with happiness that I found this place!
THANK YOU ALL! ;-)

Inspiring! This is encouraging to hear, and I'm printing it out for those hard days when it just sounds unmanageable. I'm so happy Bert's hanging in there, after 9 years. Incredible!

Happy Anniversary Felice and Bert!!!

Tigger and I are right behind you coming up on eight years next month.

So nice to hear that Bert is doing well and still hanging in there - and you too! Thank you for the update. May there be many more healthy years still in store for Bert.

P.S. after seeing you switch to Levemir successfully a few years ago, it helped give me the push to do the same! :)

:RAHCAT Congratulations, Felice, on a job well done and sending many good wishes for more happy anniversaries to celebrate with Bert. It'll be 8 for Mishka this year and 9 for Hope but she's in remission right now and we believe it is from her heart condition, RCM.

Congratulations and what an uplifting story! My kitty has also been down a slippery road but with the help of everyone here, we are doing well. Ketones have been a major problem with mine, would you mind sharing the Chinese Herb you use?

Happy Anniversary!!!!!!!!!
