Today is Beau's birthday! He is 15. This photo is from two months ago. I think he was waiting for me to sit down at my computer so he could get in my lap.
Unfortunately, he is not doing well. He has a degenerative neurological disease of some kind and is unsteady, may be in pain, and he is not eating enough. Sometimes he seems ok, but other times he tumbles off things, like my desk (that he is sitting on in the photo) and now he doesn't land on his feet all the time - and I think that really rattles him.
My poor boy is fading and I fear this will be his last birthday. It is so sad for me as he is in very good health otherwise. I mean his heart, BP, BG, kidney values, lung function are all very good for his age. And there doesn't seem to be any treatment for whatever he has - although, first we would have to know what, exactly, is happening, which we don't. I'm not going to put him through an MRI under anesthesia at his age, even with the good values mentioned above. I just try to make him comfortable as much as I can.
Rest assured, I am treating his pain (gabapentin) and buying all kinds of food to entice him to eat. He spends a lot of time on my lap purring and still enjoys the balcony when it is not too warm. I may ask for an appetite stimulant, but I have never had much success with them in other cats.
I will take every day with him as the gift that it is and has been since his cardiomyopathy diagnoses at the age of 3. And tonight he gets NY strip steak for dinner!
