We're doing feeds every 12 hours as advised by our vet. It's hard going as our cats used to just graze all day.

What I'd like to know is, when you put the food down - how long do you give them ti eat it?

Our vet says anything they don't eat you need to remove and bin. This is so that we know exactly how much she's eaten; half her meal = half her dose of insulin.

HOWEVER.... how long is long enough for them to take what they're gonna take? 10 mins? an hour?

Advice appreciated.

With your insulin you need to be sure kitty eats well before giving a shot...that seems to be the reason vets say only feed 12/12. All mine are grazers - I leave food out most of the time only picking it up within 2 hours of shot time to be sure I get a good clean test. The vet doesn't have to put up with that starving kitty so it's easy for them to say only feed twice a day.

My kitty grazes on wet all day. I never take it away until it's 2 hours before her morning shot and 2 hours before her night shot.

Why does your vet want this feeding schedule?

I do the same with his meals and lunches. Leave them out for him to finish later and if anything is left 2 hours prior to PS time, I take it up. I never even entertained the 2x feeding a day :). My boy also has to gain some weight back, that's why he gets 4 meals a day with some Young Again Zero left out in between. Also taken up if there's any left 2 hours prior.

My cats aren't free feeders anymore. Tonight, the BG was low so sure he got a few more helpings. Normally, I put it down and then take it up when I leave for work. At night, I put it down during my dinner time and clean it up as I do my cleanup. It works for us. No snacks, no food treats throughout the day. They are good eaters on the 12/12 split. Definitely took some time to break the free feed grazing but... we are okay now.

Thanks everyone. So far 12/12 is doing ok for us. I leave the food down for about an hour maybe. They eat their main fill, then get the injection and then I let them have another 30 mins or so to eat up after that. Seems to be working.

2 weeks in to this new diabetic routine and Fluff is doing good. BG at 15 mmo/l.

We have 5 cats now, once had 9 cats and a dog constantly into the cats kibble . Pulling all those bowls just didn't work and we had to hide them somewhere! Thankfully Noah only browses the kibble and always eats his wet when the time comes. Noah is never on an exact 12/12, too many other things going on in the house. He's never more than 30 minutes off though.
