Hi there! New member here.

My cat, Dexter, is very food motivated. It is very difficult to get him to sit still before feeding time for me to get a pre-shot reading in the morning (AMPS) or evening (PMPS).

As I understand it, AMPS and PMPS are typically obtained between 5 and 30 minutes prior to any food being served (and insulin given). Is this right?

For those who are also owned by food-motivated kitty cats, what are your tips to get a cat to sit still so that you can get an AMPS or PMPS?

Would you ever use 11+ (or +11.5) to infer what AMPS/PMPS is?
He gets really antsy the hour before his feeding time :\

Thanks a lot!

Hi and welcome to both you and Dexter to the forum.
If you are using Lantus…the routine is test, feed and then shoot. They can be done one after the other and there is no need to wait after feeding to give the dose of Lantus.
If you are having trouble getting Dexter to sit still to be tested, you can put a teaspoon of low carb food, maybe mixed with a teaspoon of warm water to make it last longer and let him eat that while you do the test. It takes at least 15 minutes for the food to take effect so you should be fine.
I used to let Sheba eat some broth which I made while I tested her. I used to get everything ready and her positioned and then put the food down and test straight way.
See how you go with that.
I see you are feeding k/d wet food. That is very high in carbs. Is there a reason you are feeding that?
Have a look at this FOOD LIST and chose a food that is 10% or less carbs.

Here is another evert useful link which contains links hypo kit, signature and Ss and other good information

Thanks so much, Bron. Good to know that it takes at least 15 minutes for the food to take effect. He's a LOT calmer after he eats, so if I can't get him to settle down before the shot using the tips you provided, then I will take a reading right after he eats.

I've fixed my signature, I was thinking of my other cat who eats k/d. Dexter eats DM wet food. Sorry for the confusion.
