Tips for weight GAIN while on insulin

Hey gang. Frankie is back from a 4 night stay at the vet from DKA, and while in recovery he's very skinny and weak. Vet has instructed me to continue feeding dry food until he is stable (he eats dry food more readily). I have transdermal Mirataz and some cyproheptadine tablets on hand.

Any tips on getting his weight and strength back up, while also on insulin / close BG management? What's the verdict on giving low-carb meals in-between shots, like a 3oz can of paté or a pouch of mousse?

Any other suggestions, something akin to physical therapy?

Hi. No physical therapy while not fully recovered from the DKA.

One Medical Full Nutrition Rehabilitation is KMR. Use Feed To Target, up to wanted weight for Frankie. And give the KMR formula several times a day, with a full vitamin and protein egg yolk whisked out in every time. Manufacturer Petag https://petag.com/
While also keep up with the ordinary food.

Day Step by Day Step in slow recovery is the best.

Hi Alayna,

Great to hear that your boy is back home! (((Frankie))) :cat:

If I were in the situation I'd be loathe to do anything that might rock the boat on the food side of things. I would look to stick with the food that my cat was able to eat readily and to keep down. I wouldn't look to add additional foods for fear of triggering a GI upset and risk possible DKA relapse.

I'd suggest checking back with the vets to ask them for the feeding routine that has been working for Frankie thus far and then look to emulate that at home. I'd also suggest asking the vets for advice on how much to feed for the first several days to make sure Frankie stays stable, and also ask them when it might be OK to increase the amount of the current food to help with weight gain.

I also have NutriCal, would it be wise to supplement him with that? Guessing not because I think it's chock full of sugar lol.

I suspect the dry food is also recommended by your vet because it is more calorie-dense than wet food. In order to gain weight he will need more calories. I always found feeding little snacks in between meals worked best for my guy, I usually feed a couple of snacks a little before his usual nadir, but we have only used Lantus and Levemir.

As for strength, part of that will be natural recovery, he's been through a lot the last number of days, so give him some time to get used to being home.
