Our housemate is away at the moment (left yesterday morning) and last night we noticed that one of his cats couldn't open his right eye properly. It was watering and his 3rd eyelid was most of the way across his eye.

We took him to the vet today and apparently he's scratched his eye. They don't think it was one of the other cats, they said it looks more like he ran into something. He's got eye drops, but they said it'll itch as it starts to heal so he has to wear the dreaded cone of shame for the next week.

He's already got out of the cone once - he's an ex-feral big, strong cat and is very determined that the cone has to come off. Anyone got any tips for keeping it on him - we can't do a 24/7 watch on him to make sure it stays on!

Poor kitty! Have you tried threading the eye collar with some string and then tying it around his neck? There should be holes in the e-collar for that. Otherwise, try making some small slots with an exacto knife or something similar to thread the string through the holes in the collar.

I know, he's feeling very sorry for himself at the moment. And of course he's scared of everything with the cone on because he can't see around him properly...that sort of thing doesn't make an ex-feral happy!! The vet did use a piece of soft bandage to tie the cone on so I'll take a look at it and see about replacing the bandage with something less stretchy. :)

Hope that helps! This brings back memories of CJ bumping into everything. What helped was getting a shorter e-collar that was a clear see-thru. She was still miserable but at least she could see where she was going!

Yeah, we'll have to see how he goes with it over the next day or so. At the moment, he's finding it difficult because he can climb up on things, but then he can't see to get back down so he's feeling pretty miserable. And of course his Dad isn't home either, so he's got to make do with us...bad enough that Michael put him in the car and dragged him off to the vet this morning, but now we're putting drops in his eyes too!!

We could give it a try I guess - he's never even had his nails trimmed. Our housemate believes in minimal intervention with his cats, though he did agree that the vet visit and treatment today was necessary (we'd have taken the cat to our vet even if he hadn't agreed tbh). I have to say we must be one of our vet's best customers - when I called them this morning they pulled our account up on the screen without even asking me to confirm my name! OK, my accent probably has something to do with it but, even so...

I'd love to try him with one of those - it looks much more comfortable. My only concern is that they won't stop him rubbing his eye on something if it itches. And as we're taking care of him for the next 2 weeks, it's pretty much on us to make his recovery happen. Fortunately, he likes me for whatever strange cat reason he has, so he let me tip his head back and put a drop in his eye without having to burrito wrap him (this is a cat who put Michael in the ER with scratches and bites just over a year ago so I was nervous about treating him!!)

I probably could make one of those without too much bother - I think I might try that...if he's only going to be in it for a week, by the time I get anything delivered it'll be almost time for it to come off (I hope)!
