Glen is on to me! He had 13 teeth extracted yesterday. I gave him his buprenex last night but it was a huge struggle. Any tips?
I know it is supposed to be absorbed in the mouth and not in food so looking for some strategies!

You could try wrapping a big towel or blanket around him making a kitty burrito with just his head sticking out.
My mom has to do this to give her cat pills, liquids, or drops in her ears.
Do you have anyone who can hold him while you give him the bupe?

A few thoughts - Bupe can be injected, so if you think Glen is in a lot of pain and won't let you near his mouth you could ask your vet if this might be an option. He might be especially sensitive due to mouth pain.

A technique I use with one of my particularly uncooperative cats is to stand her on the edge of the sink and put my arm over her. She can't wriggle much or she will fall and she has a good self-preservation instinct. I have o be very quick with sticking whatever in her mouth with the free hand.

Sometimes its best to pick the battle. If you have to give him abx by mouth as well, maybe its better to sacrifice the pain meds and give the abx. I'm not suggesting just letting him suffer, but if truly impossible to give him bupe focus on the abx and contact the vet for other pain management options.

Buprenorphine the same thing? A couple of different letters can make a big difference. Islandmomma, same story, dental pain, cat hates me for giving him it orally. Injectable too restricted in Canada so I got pre-loaded syringes of a topical that I can dab on the inside of his ears. Tonight's the first night, will post how it works. Wish me luck. Wish us all luck.

Yes my typo! I've never heard of the topical. I'm only giving for another day or so. I will only be missing s bit more skin so no worries LOL

Got it Larry, thanks. With reference to the spelling, here scripts are all done on a standard computer template, no more scribbling on pads which should mean no more errors. Mandatory for doctors to log into Big Brother via Firefox. Do computers make health care better? Last year I had very minor day-surgery and when I went to see my family doc a week later on another matter she thought the swelling was a bit odd. Sent me to emergency because there's no in between and her note said 30 cm incision with swelling. NO, it's 30 mm! That will now be a part of my forever medical history. I've also had a phone ringing as I enter the door. The pharmacist > "Did you take any yet? Don't!"

Wow, 13 teeth. Poor kitty. His mouth might be a bit sore, but the pain med would take care of that once you get it in. It would absorb faster if you can get it in his check or even on tongue. I don't know how well it's absorbed trans dermal

Yes I'm managing to give it to him twice a day. It's a struggle for sure but I'm doing my best. He seems way different already. I'm guessing those teeth were sore and just having them gone is better.

Our poor kitties. They used to give me valium just to clean my teeth! Now I always opt for nitrous oxide. La la land..........Great thing is the very second the gas is off you're outa there. You can even drive. If our cats could talk "You idiot, look in my mouth, can't you see that or even smell it?"

I use to need the novacaine injections for my teeth cleaning. After would always be a strawberry milkshake. I'd be numb for hours.

Now they have this extra strength numbing gel they use that lasts 15-20 minutes. So much better than the injections.

If you read the 2015 AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats, bupe injections are not so effective if given subq, but are if given in the muscle, which most of us are not used to doing with our cats. I found it easier to give bupe if I sat the cat in front of me, facing her (or his) back. Then I'd reach my hand around with the syringe pointing back to me. Put the syringe in the crack of the mouth, and point to the check and squirt.

I'm lucky with Smoky as he is very easy to give pills too. He doesn't have a problem with liquid meds. He seems to be doing OK on the bupe so far. It's not making him spaced out or anything...yet. it's only been 2.5 hours since I gave it to him though.

re: buprenorphine and my confusion with the spelling. Has anyone ever read the "How to use FDMB" where the lawyer (lawyer can't be all that bad if he has a sick cat) warns against probable (not possible) lawsuits for giving the wrong advice? Really scary! And who gets sued, the kind people who run this site with no advertising or pop-ups. Okay, no more drama.
Same as some of you Noah has a dental issue and won't survive surgery and HATES me when he gets it orally.
I said I would report back about the Transdermal syringes. SUCCESS!!! In my case I got 1ml syringes, preloaded. It's the consistency of toothpaste. You plunge the amount needed on the backside of the little tiny spoon provided, it won't roll off, and smear it on the inside of his ear. You have to clean the ear first, warm water, no soap. He took it very well, no pawing at the ear, no irritation. My vet said getting the subcutaneous syringes in Canada would trigger an F16 flyby. Now only if Noah could talk and tell me how much better that feels. Much Thanks to all for the advice and wishing luck and love to those in a similar situation.
