tips for getting vaseline/petroleum jelly out of fur?

Since I have been testing Simba pretty often, the vaseline that I have been using on his ears seems to have worked its way down into the fur at the base of his ears in the back/sides. Is there a way to get it out without bathing him? I am going to try to use less.
