We just returned from the vets and Tipper's blood test was 455 no change after being on low carb wet food for one week. In addition Tipper lost 1/2 lb. A little backgound-- Tipper is a semi feral indoor cat, extremely shy. We adopted her from an extremely bad living situation and has for the last nine years remained very skittish. We gave her her first shot this AM and she is now hiding under the couch. She is eating very little from what I can tell and have not found any wet food that she likes, so we put her on Purina DM. she ate a small amount at the vets yesterday. We are a multi cat household so its hard to tell what she is eating. I've tried hand feeding her but after her shot she is extremely frightened. Would love to here from anyone in a simliar situation and any insights on how to manage Tipper. Thanks, Patty

Hi Patty,

The shot should make her feel a little better and soon she will associate that with the shot. You do want her to eat, however. Warm up the wet food in the microwave until nice and stinky. You can put a little parmesan cheese or tuna juice on top. If she is in a room by herself, under the bed, why don't you put the warmed up food in there with her to see if she will come out to eat it. Most kitties do not like the DM; it is liver based. Try one of the Fancy Feast flavors - turkey or chicken.

There are other things you can buy to help but let's see if we can get her to eat this morning.

Thanks for your response. I did get her to eat some FF salmon and DM dry almost 3/4 can of FF. Now I'm off to buy a meter. The vet suggested the Bayer Ascencia Contour. I checked online and there is one for about $20.00 and another for $50.00. I think the vet said the cost was going to be around $50.00. Is there a difference?? She only has one complete ear tip the other was tipped off after her neutering because she was a trap and release kittie. Wish me luck!!!

Good for you. Here is a list of the things you will need:

A human glucometer. Any one that sips and takes a tiny sample is fine. The meters are often free at drug stores; it’s the strips that are expensive. You can, however, buy them on ebay at less than half the price of stores. Lots of people here also like the ReliOn from Walmart. It is an inexpensive meter and its strips are the cheapest around.

Lancets and a lancet device. Usually, until the ears “learn” to bleed, a 25-26 gauge is good. Any brand will work.

Ketone strips. (Ketostix) Just like human diabetics use. You will sometimes need to test urine if the numbers are high.

Rice sack. Make this out of thinnish sock, filled with raw rice or oatmeal and then knotted. You heat this in the microwave until very warm but not hot. Then heat the ears before poking.

Also nice to have. Flashlight: so you can look at the ears and find the little capillaries that come off the vein running down the ear. Vaseline: Put a tiny smear where you want to poke. It will help the blood bead up.

And some lo carb treats to give your kitty, successful test or not Lo carb treats
