Hi All,

So, Petey's numbers seem to be all over the place. Our vet says that if he tests over 150 we should give him 4 units and if he is under, give nothing. Does this sound odd to anyone?

Another thing... My mom (who is the one burdened with all of this, and on the verge of giving up) has been testing at not quite 12 hour intervals. She may test and give insulin at 8am and then 6pm. I imagine that not honoring the 12 hour intervals can make the numbers unpredictable, especially when the vet is having her not give the shot if the number is low OR a full 4 units if the number is high.

Lastly... do you see a problem with testing/feeding/shot at 8am.... and feeding at 6pm.... test/shot at 8pm?
 
It sounds like your vet might be more familiar with the older insulins. First off, 4 units is too high a dose. A couple days ago you say a 47, which means Petey's needs a reduced dose. Especially since that was on teh AT. How about trying something like 3.5 units? Do you have the syringes with 1/2 unit markings? If you do a lower dose, you might be less likely to have those low preshot numbers that are currently causing you to skip dosing. He'll do better if he can do the same dose AM and PM.

And yes, you should try to give the shots as close to 12 hours apart as you can. Maybe up to 1/2 hour difference in a day. An early shot acts like an increase. Ideally it's best if you test, then feed, then give insulin. And try to not feed for the two hours before the shot, otherwise the test pretest number you get will be influenced by food.
