I gave a fur shot this AMPS.....grrrrrr! :mad: First one in quite awhile, but I was distracted with another sick kitty and well, just shot early. I know not to shoot and will take a BG test @ +2, but I was wondering when if ever you might can give just a drop if the numbers are high. Any guide lines for future info? If reading is high 300's , is it ever safe to give just a tiny bit? I am so mad at myself! I am having a tough week, another sick kitty, went to the vet spent $$ and he still is not eating this morning. :arghh: Had blood work, found nothing so far. I have tried tuna water, boiled chicken, FF grilled, and more. On top of that, I gave Rupert a fur shot! Sorry, just needed a shoulder to cry on. :arghh:
 
Sorry, Lynn. Hope your day improves! No, I wouldn't give any insulin. It's just one cycle; you'll get him back on track. What you could do is shoot early if it won't wreck up your schedule - +8 would be doable if he is high enough and sure rising.

For your civie: anything he loves? People food/ snacks? Hope it turns out he was just having an off day. Pepcid sometimes is supposed to help - not sure what the dose should be but you could search for it.
 
Thanks Julia and Sue, I am just having a bad day, week! I will wait and check his numbers through out the day, Sue, and shoot at +8 if able. My civie, Tuffy, usually loves most food, I have tried everything and so far nothing. He has been "off" since Sunday, throwing up, loose stools, listless. I took him to the vet, a VERY expensive vet and they did a complete blood work up, found nothing, but said it could be cancer and wouldn't show. :arghh: He was fine till Sunday! He got an anti nausea shot, some antibiotics and they hydrated him. I gave him a some Pedialyte (unflavored) with syringe yesterday and he threw that up too. So it was off to the vets. He seems better, but still won't eat. I will keep trying...I have about 6 cans of food open already! Oh well, they won't go to waste. Thanks for the shoulders!
 
Aww, Lynn ... so sorry you're having such a crappy day! (The shock of paying up @ the vet alone would be enough to bum me out!:rolleyes:) Sure hope it's nothing more than a temporary tummy upset in your civie. Keep us posted, ok? And try not to beat yourself up about that FS; just happens. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
Sorry to hear that, Lynn! I know those fur shots stink, but we've all been there! You'll get him back on track...better to be safe by not giving any insulin!

Sorry to hear about your civvie too! Did the vet try an appetite stimulant by chance?
 
Y'all are the best, thank you for caring! He does not go outside Robin, except for a giant, screened lanai, or better known as my catio! I checked around, no dead, half eaten lizards, nothing that he got into. I don't think they gave him an appetite stimulant, just an anti-nausea shot. I need him to eat something today, my cc is maxed out after Rupert's vet bills last month and now Tuffy's. :arghh: When did vet's get to be so friggin high? Tuffy's blood work was more then mine, last time I went to the doctor's. :eek:

Oh, yes - those vet bills: YIKES! I need to schedule Bat-Bat for a dental soon & know how expensive that'll be. Ugh. :(

Any luck yet on getting something into your civvie? (What's that kitty's name, btw? Would love to see a photo!)
 
100_2143.JPG What a day! My civvie, Tuffy, that's him being plant mulch, still was not eating by late afternoon. I tried everything I could think of, but the vet gave me some an appetite stimulant (Rachael's idea) and more anti-nausea pills. The stimulant seemed to turn the tide and he finally ate tonight! Yeah! I was doing the happy dance! :smuggrin: :smuggrin: Funny though, I tried all the best, tasty wet foods I could get my hands on and he went for the dang kibble.:mad: Go figure. I hope he will continue to improve, he does seem much better now. Thanks for your support and expert advice!
 
Tuffy and I want to thank everyone for their kindness and help! :cat: :kiss: He is eating like a champ this morning, unfortunately he is still going for the kibble! :mad: I will have to slowly wean him off it again, but I am just glad he is eating anything right now. I am still not sure what was wrong, maybe a cold, not much for symptoms though. Keeping my fingers crossed that he will be back to his normal, goofy self and stay there! It was quite a circus trying to get Tuffy to eat and keeping Rupert from eating it! I was feeding Tuffy in a separate room, but Rupert is on high alert to any activity in the kitchen and yowls at any signs of food! I was hiding food for Tuffy under my shirt to avoid Ruperts "what do you have there, food, huh, food? gimme, gimme GIMME!" o_Oo_O

I can so relate to your circus. Over here at my house it's the same circus, different clowns! My civvie cat, Forrest is a grazer. Barely eats 1 oz at a pop. Bubba the sugar baby devours his food; sucks it up like an anteater. So, I am constantly having to sneak Forrest more later because he is just used to eating that way and BD( before diabetes) I used to always have food down for them......... so, we have the same issues. So, you are not alone......
 
Exactly, it is a circus! I have two anteaters (hee,hee like that term), one tortoise and Tuffy is some where in between, he always leaves his bowl to check out the other's. He is convinced they have something better! If I am not watching or they are not separated, the civvie anteater swoops in and steals all his food! I have to always feed Rupert separately, he inhales, even with smearing, water, plates, mugs to slow him down. As of now, I have to feed in three different rooms! :banghead: Ah, I miss those days of dry kibble filled bowls and everyone eating at their leisure. Course that is why I am in this predicament now! Stupid kibble. :mad:
 
If he had a bit of a cold, that might have been part of the appetite problem. If kitties can't smell the food, they might not be as interested in eating. And, speaking for myself, my stomach is often upset by a cold!

I'm so glad to hear that he is eating again. We used an appetite stimulant on my girl once, and it really helped! Sometimes, you just have to get them eating again to remind them that they want to! At this point, as long as he is eating, give him what he wants. You can work your way back to wet food, but it's most important to get food into him.

Have you tried Forti Flora? I've never used it, but many here have said it's golden in getting their little ones to eat...especially when trying to wean dry food addicts off kibble.
 
I think he does have a bit of a cold, he had bad viral/herpes when he was a kitten and his sniffer is never the best. Cats are strange, they do seem to need a kick start sometimes to start eating again. Wish I had that problem! :rolleyes: Once he started, he was fine, so dry kibble it is at least till I can convince him how yummy and good the wet is. I have read about the Forti Flora and also bonita flakes from the Asian markets (with no wheat), I think it would be a good idea to have some on hand for emergencies. He was eating the wet just fine, but I might have to use some FF or flakes to get him going on it again. Thanks again for all your help Rachel! :bighug:
