Hello,
I have an 18 year old diabetic cat, Simon, who is losing too much weight. My vet recommended Royal Canin Rescue, but I have also discovered the Tiki Cat Veterinary Solutions Gluco-Balance. I am looking at a mousse because he is missing some teeth.

Does anyone have opinions or experience with this food? I tried a search of the forum, but was unsuccessful.

Also, I notice that it containes powdered cellulose. Is this bad?

Thank you!

This is a wet food.
Here's a link to the website: https://www.tikivet.com/
I'm looking at the Chicken and Chicken liver gluco balance mousse.
I used the carb calculator and it shows to be very low.

Curious if anyone else has used this, and if their cats liked it.

@CORKY Thank you for your reply.
Can you please provide the nutritional information that you have for the TikiCat Veterinary Chicken and Chicken liver gluco balance wet cat food?
I am interested in seeing your numbers.
This is a food that is specifically formulated for Diabetic cats and is indicated on their website as LOW Carbs/High protien.

The list you provided is from 2017, which is 8 years ago. I believe this food is faily new.

Again, I am asking if anyone has used this food and if their cat likes it.
I'm not looking to choose from an old list.

I will tag another member that might be able to do that she is very knowledgeable with data

Cellulose is a fibrous plant-based compound used as a cheap filler. The form often found in cat food is derived from sawdust and is not meant to be eaten by cats - or anyone for that matter. Cellulose is used to make paper, fabrics, sponges and glue. Powdered cellulose provides no nutritional value so it may fill up a cat's stomach without delivering any essential nutrients. There also may be health risks from contaminated or low quality sources of cellulose. Hill's uses powdered cellulose in their weight control formulas.

Regular Tiki Cat is a good food but I would not feed the 'veterinary' formula to my cats. It's not uncommon for 18 yr. old cats to have trouble maintaining weight - we have a 21 yr. old and it can be a struggle to keep his appetite working. CBD oil seems to help some.

I hope you were able to get your concern answered:bighug::cat::cat:

Hi
I use many of the Tiki cat products. Most are zero to 6% carbs. In fact I have a lot of trouble finding higher than zero. I actually tried a can of this, I didn’t bother doing calculations but i will now and come back soon with them. Even though it’s listed and appears like a mousse it has more firmness to it (not quite pate but close) than the tiki mousse in pouch (which methos adores) so it was not a hit with him.

I have nutritional info for many of the shreds and most of the mousses—I will need to ask on the technical section how I can upload because screenshots are too blurred. But I can do a rough calculation. It’s won’t be 100% precise bc tiki doesn’t usually list the ash content and having that can alter the carbs a bit —but my calculations will be the max carbs it may be

Also I have had good success contacting Tiki about nutritional info (how I got what I want to post). I’d already calculated carbs but they provided calculations that included ash and it lowered my numbers even more. I’m sure if you emailed them they could both give you the carb content AND tell you the source of their cellulose. Since cellulose is found in fruit, vegetables, beans etc I’d be surprised if Tiki used sawdust, considering the fact their food is essentially what we would eat. It’s a water-insoluble fiber similar to psyllium (widely approved here), and its function generally is to add bulk to stool and maintain better glucose and cholesterol control.

Ok. Looking at all the products I have ash content on, including the mousses, it varies from one to two percent ash in the Guarenteed analysis. So I arbitrarily set it at 1.5% ash. If my math holds this by dry matter basis:
Protein 70%
fat 13.5%
Fiber 7.5%
Carb 1.5%

Converting to percent of calories (like The [old] Chart):

protein 67%
Fat 31.4%
Carb 1.4%

calculations for zero Ash (impossible, but worst case) to follow

The difference from above if there is no ash in carb content:
Carb 9% by dry matter basis
Carb 8% by percent calories

but again, I’d be surprised if ash was less than 1.5% GA

how to describe the mousse—it really seemed more like a very fine pate or if you got a mousse desert a rather “stiff” mousse. The pouch mousses are more like a semi set pudding or very thick soup, or I guess sour cream. So there is more body to it but I don’t think chewing is necessary. It just wasn’t the soupy texture Methos prefers.

all of the luau velvet mousses are zero carbs except chicken and egg which is 0.07 percent (not 7 percent, 0.07 so practically zero). Protein ranges from 59-72%, fat from 22-36% depending on flavor. The two tiki senior mousses (tiki silver) have more carbs (chicken is 5.66%, salmon 4.62%). All of these are by dry matter so calculating by percent calories would lower the numbers

I hope this helps

A few more comments (sorry)—is he losing weight because the diabetes is not yet controlled? That will reverse as it’s better controlled but seniors still tend to lose weight. Tiki also makes Comfort Sachets that are 25 cal each. They aren’t nutritionally complete so can’t be a meal but they can add calories because they have a lot in a small amount. Methos would walk through fire for them. They are 80% protein and 20% fat (no carbs).

to me the only negative about tiki food is its very high protein so most aren’t suitable for cats with renal disease (two of the senior foods are: tuna and mackerel which is small chunks of fish, and chicken which is tiny —very tiny—shreds of chicken ina semi soupy texture

edit: well also a negative is this isn’t cheap food. I don’t know the price comparison bc I only bought a couple of cans of the gluco balance and didn’t look closely at price. If it’s more than the tiki mousse pouches , which are pricey enough, you could start with the pouches

Thanks for all of the replies!
I contacted TikiCat, and this is what they sent to me:
Tiki Cat Veterinary Solutions Gluco-Balance Chicken and Chicken Liver Recipe has 3.95% carbohydrates (ME).
I have also attached the file they sent with the complete analysis.

@SmallestSparrow He's losing weight because he has some sinus issues which may be blocking his ability to smell. Just finished antibiotics for that and I do see his appetite improving.
Despite that, I'm keeping a close eye on him in case he crashes :(

I’ve found the fish flavors to have more of a smell among the shreds (little chunks of fish) but even the mousses have a fish smell. So that’s another thing that may help. Or get some freeze dried salmon or Bonita flakes treats (low carb) and crumble a little on top. I sometimes use fortiflora not for its probiotic but because whatever they put in to stimulate appetite really works. Instead of mixing a whole packet (although you could do that) I sprinkle a little like salting a meal. I can’t smell it (but I have a poor sense of smell) but my boys can smell it from across the room.

good luck, and as I said I think the mousse pouches are more like a Wendy’s shake or sour cream thickness, the canned gluco control firmer.
