Thanks everybody in the FDMB - you helped save my cat's life. I see you all as the angel on my left shoulder giving me good advice... care to guess what that makes the Vet (who we've fired)?
Tiger Lily has been OTJ for 7 days (going on 8) after becoming diabetic thanks to the diet cat food her vet prescribed for her. The insulin helped when she was testing at 541! and she was on insulin for about a week and a half as the numbers slowly went down. On the advice of the forums here, and a great health food pet store (Tail Blazers in Lethbridge, thanks!) she is now eating high protein very low carb wet food, which has been steadily bringing her blood glucose down.
Here's the misty eyed, thank you part... she hit 113 on Nov 28th and without this board I wouldn't have been testing her blood, and I wouldn't have known to stop the insulin when it got this low (my vet NEVER mentioned this). I would have continued injecting her with 3 units of Vetsulin twice daily, with obvious, tragic results. Can I say this enough... thank you again, everybody who's replied to my messages, and everybody who's even written a message on this board, thank you for saving Tiger Lily's life!!!!!
Other than one scary morning at 277 (think she got into some kitty crack overnight) she's been averaging 60-90,a little bit lower every day, with no insulin, . She's getting exercise and is a happier cat than she's been in the last two years. With fingers crossed, knocking on wood, Tiger Lily is now OTJ, diet controlled. Of course I will keep poking her ears
and keeping a close eye on her!
I wish the pet stores would throw out all of their dry cat food, and make you buy a blood glucose meter with every new cat purchase, can you imagine all of those happy healthy cats running around? :mrgreen:
