I am a little worried because he threw up after his morning injection...he was fine before it, and then threw up, but is acting normal again, I fed him more, which I am only giving Purina DM wet food..any thoughts?

Hello and welcome. I saw that you had posted on the Prozinc forum, but it is best to post on this forum in the beginning.

To answer your question, as long as he's keeping food down now, he should be OK. Maybe something upset his tummy? Or if he eats fast, he could be doing a scarf and barf. After throwing up, just feed smaller amounts over time to start.

I have lots of questions. First, what is his name? How long since he was diagnosed as a diabetic? How long has he been getting the DM food? A lot of cats get tired of it, there is no special reason to feed it for a diabetic cat. It's OK carb wise, but not the greatest ingredients. There are plenty of appropriate commercially available foods he could eat. Are you home testing his sugars?

The answers to the above could be put in your signature, this post gives you and idea what we like to see: New? How You Can Help Us Help You!

His name is Snoopy! He's 13 1/2 and doesn't look it or act it...he was diagnosed mid August, and has been on Prozinc since, recommended 2 shots a day...I've been buying this kind of expensive food since then...but money is no problem!! I've read that a high protein low carb diet is important, but what other foods are good for this situation? He hasn't thrown up since, only a hairball, since he's a big guy, part Maine Coon and very luxuriously hairy!!! What other food can he eat safely? And in answer to your question about testing sugars, no not yet...He's 100% better now, and acts like a kitten again!!! I'd appreciate any helpful information!! Thanks

What "expensive food" are you feeding him now? You don't need to buy the vet food, there are plenty of commercially available low carb foods that are appropriate for diabetics. You want something under 10% carbs - this is one food list that has product information for carbs. It's a few years old now, meaning there are new products out now. Here is a second food list that is more current but still working on getting data.

However, please do not switch his food to a lower carb food without learning to home test, or put a Freestyle Libre on him. Insulin needs can drop a lot when you switch food, so you need to monitor to prevent hypos.

We're feeding Purina DM, which he loves....it comes in minced and savory selects...it's not that expensive, and I get a good price on
chewy...also, his BG started out at 474 which was super high (we had a full blood panel done with everything else coming out normal), and then progressively went down to 440, 420, 259, and last time was 200...my husband and I are new to this so it wasn't specifically told that we needed to home test. He also went from 21.4 lbs to 18.6 which is very good!!!! Thank you for time.

Good to hear he likes the DM, some cats get tired of it. The regular minces OK for diabetics, but not great ingredients. The savory selects is a bit higher carbs that we'd usually suggest. Note that it's call dietetic management, not diabetes management.

Vets don't alway suggest home testing to their clients. But if it is the best way to keep him safe. Especially if you have a goal of getting them into diabetic remission.

Thanks again, but I'm confused...I have been researching everything about diabetes as this is my first time ever dealing with this, and I've had cats my whole life, I'm 61..so I read that the Purina DM (DM stands for is "dietetic management").....for diabetes!!!!...so I don't understand what you mean by not diabetes management? I don't know what other food options are good, and my vet is a very well trusted and respected doctor in our area...are they steering me wrong? I'm just confused, the more I read the harder it gets!!! Sorry, thanks again😼

Wendy means that the DM stands for dietetic management, not diabetes management. At one point it was "diabetic management" but Purina changed it because the food really doesn't do a thing to help a diabetic cat.

It's ok to ignore the vet about food :) Many vets have very little knowledge about nutrition other than very bare basics. Feed your cat whatever low carb canned food he likes :) The food charts are here: Links to FOOD CHARTS Any food that has under 10% carbs is good for a diabetic. If you're in another country that doesn't have a food chart, just start a new thread and ask for food suggestions.

At least in Canada, vets get something less than a day's training on nutrition and that is for both cats and dogs. And often by a representative for Hill's or one of the other big pet food companies that markets to vets. The reason Purina changed the DM name is that they were sued and were forced to change the name as it doesn't do anything special for diabetes. However, if he loves the food, it is suitable (not the savoury selects), just expensive.
