Hi Everyone,

I'm writing probably out of frustration. I got my cat out from the hospital 10 days ago, and he has been on insulin (3 units, one in the morning and one in the evening) since I got him out.

The insulin is not the issue for me. My cat Hershey has been ok with it. The real issue is that it's already 10 days and he still would not want to eat on his own. I have been assisting him eat using a syringe, with the canned prescription food mixed with a little water. Before he got sick, he was always on dry food, and he liked it a lot. I have been trying to give him his old food but he simply won't touch it.

I guess my first question is: with a glucose reading tonight of 342, is it still ok for him to continue on not eating normally (he barely ate anything tonight)? Next question is, when do you think he would end up eating on his own?

I guess I am after your inputs based on your own experience with your cats. I am aware there are a lot of details I did not include here, but your general inputs would be a good start (as I am trying to always have those other inputs in mind whenever I discuss things with my vet).

Hope you can contribute. Thanks.

Dear Duds, no it's not ok for him not to eat and to receive insulin. Are you testing him at home? How long was he in the hospital and what for?

Hmmm a couple of rough things that come to mind, first 3 units is a high starting dose, most cats need 1 to 2u max some even less.

Was he checked for ketones, and are you testing for them. Not eating on his own and running high in blood sugar can be a recipe for them. Which can turn very serious very quickly. You use the same test strips as human diabetics to test his urine for ketones, if they are present then he needs to go back to the vet asap.

Also with not eating have you tried other canned foods? Out of my 11 cats here not a single one of them would touch the prescription stuff. But I feed all 11 on just plain Friskies pate flavors. Also some other tricks to get a kitty eating are pouring a little tuna juice over it, parmesan cheese, or warming it in the microwave until it is nice and stinky. You might also ask your vet about fortiflora it is the same stuff that gives dry food its flavor, and most cats love it.

Since this kitty just came from the hospital I'm thinking it's entirely possible he has been treated for ketones.
