Less than one week in and I've already saved my cats life by going against vet advice.

Tynan is on 1 unit twice a day of Lantus and I've been home testing. Not getting every reading as getting blood is still a learning curve!

Tonight I got a reading before giving shot and was shocked to see 5 as the reading, if I hadn't home tested I would have given shot and had a possible hypo.

Yesterday his reading was 24 so still wildly varying results here, making this journey seem so daunting!

Just venting...

Vent all you want, and congratulations on home testing and saving Tynans life!!! The testing will get easier and over time, and seeing the pattern on the SS will help you to get him regulated, so keep testing and asking questions.

So proud of you !!! This gets easier over time....just keep taking one step, one day at a time. You are doing so well :):)

Good Catch.:D:D:D

Did you decide what to do about the food? Is he on a LC wet? If he is on a low carb wet did you just swap him from kibble on to wet before you started insulin? or after starting insulin?

If you need help with the foods we have a few Aussie members that can probably help you with choices, not sure how up to date the Aussie lists are.
I'm in Europe so can't help directly with that other than to reiterate what Chris said and that the whiskas wet is better than the dry diabetic from hills.
Here's a link to Dr Lisa's site, a lot of great info about what you are looking for in a feline diet as well as feline health in general, I often refer back to it http://catinfo.org/

You've made a fantastic start with the home testing, it does get easier. :bighug: Great job following up the green numbers last night. One thing I would suggest, especially seeing as you got that nice green last night and it seems like Tynan is working the juice (insulin) it might be a good idea to try and get at least one midcycle test (anytime between +1 and +11) in each cycle, it's very helpful when it comes to dosing to have a good idea of how well our kitties are working the juice.
Keep up the good work.:bighug::bighug:

So glad you listened to your good sense and not your vet's advice! The same thing happened to me when Squallie was newly-diagnosed, thank heavens I didn't listen to my vet's bad advice, either, and for the people here at FDMB who helped me! :bighug::cat:

Well done you :) I will never understand why vets don't promote testing. I know it can be tricky but it is so much safer.
