It has been a few weeks now and Lucky and I and my other cat Amore are getting in the swing of the new times for eating. I fed Lucky a little late this morning. I warmed up his food in the microwave- warm not hot. He gulped it down and sat down in front of the front door, started cleaning himself and then out of nowhere he started yowling. He has never done this before. He would do it and stop for a few moments then let out another. At least six yowls. I went over to him and calmly said his name. He continued to clean himself. I sat on the couch and watched him. He got up and came laid with me on the couch. He has stopped and he seems okay. Just do not know what to think about that. Like I said, “This is a FIRST!”

I should mention this was before his insulin shot.

As always thank you everyone for taking time to read this and offer your guidance. Very grateful!

Some basic questions:

-what kind of insulin, and what dose?
-do you home test, and if so, what/when was his last test?
-is he on any other meds (e.g. mirtazapine)?
-any chance of an injury or dental issues?

Insulin: Lantus solarstar pen. 1 unit twice a day- 12 hours apart.

Today is my first curve. I use the Alphtrak 2 His blood glucose was 341

There is no other medication he takes and his teeth were fine the last Vet visit. Injury? I want to say doubtful as he is an inside cat and does not get on counters- so no chance of falling there. I’ve been home pretty much all weekend with the exception of a few errands I ran yesterday. So I did not notice any sort of injury. Gosh I hope I am not over looking anything.

OK, well, that seems to eliminate my best guesses! Maybe someone else will have some other ideas... Good luck with the curve today!

Thank you for your time and well wishes for the curve- Really do appreciate it! Have a wonderful day!

did you stir his food after microwaving it, use to warm up my kittens food & milk in microwave for a couple months and i was often amazed how even 10-15 seconds could leave a hot spot in their food..

guessing gulping his food is normal so only other thing i can thing of, since he was looking outside, that he saw another cat or something outside?? our no longer feral cat, will yowl on and off when he is looking out the door or window and there is usually a cat roaming out there.

Since new with your cat though, if he does it again after eating, it may be something inside of him is hurting, some cats yowl when they have pain.

Absolutely agree regarding the hot spots in food with even the shortest amount of time in a microwave. I mixed his food with my fingers-ha. Kind of smooshed it together (was in fridge) to mix it well. I tried finding some more information on the web and indeed he could have seen or sensed another kitty on the other side of the door. There are some feral cats around that we feed- neighbors have caught quite a few and have had them fixed then set free again. Some I think people just dumped in the neighborhood (sad). Lucky could have caught a whiff- so to say of one of them. OR one funny thing I read is that it could be a way of thanking me for one damn tasty meal! Ha ha. I never microwaved his food. Might of been his way of approval. I didn’t warm up his food tonight and there was no Yowling. So who knows. Ha ha.

I really appreciate you taking your time to offer possibilities to this situation. Thank you so much!

Maybe he heard something outside?

I think you may be right. There are outside kitties that are cared for as well. Lucky could have caught a whiff- so to say of one of them. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and offer an explanation. Thank you so much!

You didn't mention how old Lucky is. My elderly cat did this all the time but hers was due to old age and confusion. My current cat does this in the morning and I'm sure he picks up a scent of something outside because if I let him out he runs over to the fence and yowls so loud I've had the neighbor phone me thinking he was hurt. It's interesting though as to why Lucky all of a sudden is doing this when he never did before.
