OK so my Ernie was diagnosed about two years ago. He has been on humlin-n, and the curves were accpetable. Ho Prewever, they are getting out of hand now, and I am noticing some changes in my Ernie. Here is todays curve so far:

7am Pre shot 402 2 units given
+ 2 340
+4 201
+6 158
7pm Pre shot 430. 2.5 units given

I know these numbers are not acceptable, thats why i want to change insulin. sure, i could up the dosage a bit, but his numbers would still likely be going up and down drastically, and I know that is not good for h
Now, how do I get Lantus? I can get Novilin OTC. IS the same true for lantus? Where can I get it cheapest? What starting dosage is acceptable?

Thanks for your help

Hello and welcome...maybe you could say where you are located?
There are many sources for Lantus...once you get the prescription from your vet. Most people use the pens...with U100 1/2 unit syringes...
Many buy from Costco..but if you would tell us where you live, others might have suggestions for you.
i understand why you are motivated to switch and many have must better success with the longer duration insulins. I hope you will come back and post once you switch over.
You might want to read some of the stickies at the top of the page....they contain important information...
You are welcome to come back and add to this post if you have any questions...

The starting dose of Lantus is typically based on a cat's ideal weight (dose = 0.25 x ideal weight in kilograms). However, some adjustment can be made if a cat is already on insulin.

Lantus is available in a 10 ml vial or in pens/cartridges that are usually sold in a package of 5, each pen/cartridge containing 3 ml. The manufacturer recommends not keeping opened Lantus for longer than 28 days, which means that there is greater waste with a vial. (Many people here get longer than 28 days of use.)
