The Somogyi Effect- apply to kitties ?

I'm not sure the Somogyi Effect is actually a thing. If you look at Marje and Gracie's Sticky General Information and Important Links - Please read:
  • There is also a common misconception, often by vets, that bouncing is caused by chronic Somogyi rebound. Michael Somogyi published one paper based on a very small number of human diabetic subjects on the topic in 1938 in a local St. Louis medical journal. There has been no replication of the research and, in fact, anyone that has attempted to replicate the research with humans failed to find similar results. The research has never been done with cats and, just as importantly, has never been done with cats (or humans) using a long-acting insulin.

please delete.
Jockeying his doses around like that is not the way to go. Please check in here before so I can hopefully help. Sometimes the ProZinc will carry a cat and help them stay in lower BG for a bit after the shot, but he got way above the normal BG for a cat with the skipped shot. Then you ended up shooting 2 units which was fine considering his lower preshot number. Following the dosing protocol is going to help Solomon a lot more than trying to wing it. This is not a criticism. It’s just that you might not realize some things.

And it is not helpful to us to drop his dose to 2.25 and not get any data afterwards? Did the Libre fail (sorry if you wrote that in the notes.) It would help is to see what happened.

Edit: and I now know what I didn’t know then — you were ill at the time. And your Libres failed and you were not in any condition to get tests that night.

So you wrote this:

“From looking at Solomon's trends of high BG following a blue trend and then a dose - his BG increases. I'm wondering if this applies to him.”

This is called bouncing. It doesn’t mean he’s overdosed.

“I dropped his dose from 2.5 to 2.25 last night and skipped this morning and he has been in the healthy zone.”

He’s definitely gone above 120. I know you are trying to figure out his patterns and why things are happening and that is very good. Hopefully, I can help with that. Keep in mind that the Libre numbers are not 100 percent reliable in the lower numbers. A 60 on a Libre could be 120 on a handheld meter — or something else … that’s just an example because there can be quite a bit of variation between the two. Always best to check a low number on the Libre with a handheld meter whenever possible.

Maybe this will help?

From the dosing protocol (MPM)

Changing the Dose:
(general guidelines)
  • After the initial adjustment period, subsequent doses should be held for 3-6 cycles and data collected to determine next steps. Changing doses faster than that, or trying to use a sliding scale, nearly always results in bouncing and wild unpredictable variations in blood glucose, or BG getting stuck high and flat as if nothing is happening. Small steady dose changes work best.
  • PZ typically lasts 10-14 hours in most cats, and one cycle affects the next, so when changing dose, it can take a few cycles before you really see the impact of the change. It’s not uncommon for the first cycle after a dose increase to be a little higher. If this happens, try not to get discouraged. Wait a couple of cycles, collect data, and see what the BG does.
  • Conversely, if you decrease the dose when you shouldn’t, it’s not uncommon to see a good first cycle because there is still some impact from the previous higher dose. Subsequently, the following cycles may result in the numbers starting to rise. If this happens, move back up to the previous higher dose.

Got it.
I'm doing the best I can. I'm sure it may not ever be enough based on everything experts here know.
I won't post anymore. It's just another thing I can't feel "bad" about. The criticism is making me feel worse than ever which isn't helpful to me.
Thank you for the feedback.
Oh no. I am so sorry. Please forgive me!! I didn’t mean to make you feel criticized. You are really trying to do your best and not hurt Solomon because you love him more than anyone! I feel horrible about making you upset. I was just worried this morning— and so I didn’t respond to you correctly. I am not an expert either. Just someone who has been doing this for quite a while. You have already learned so much. I hope you will find it in your heart to forgive me.

Sometimes, inadvertently, analysis might sound like criticism but it is not meant this way. Suzanne was just giving you feedback but she is one of the kindest people and helpful members. If you leave, you are only hurting your cat.

It was a personal request as the post was created by me and went in a very bad direction on a very difficult day. Thanks for consideration.
