This group has honestly been a life saver for me . I was terrified of testing and now o feel like a pro . And my vet does not give me much info at all on this subject (she still wanted him on a hard food diet and to do insulin without testing) I've learned everything from this group and now feel like I'm telling my vet what to do .
Smokey was diagnosed with a 476 at the vets office and had increased urination and water consumption (drinking 7 bowls a day and a full litter box every day. I immediately changed his diet. Then last weekend his peeing went back to normal and only drinking a little bit so I decided to do a curve test Sunday because Monday we were supposed to start insulin . His numbers for the chart went from 190 to 230 then the rest of the week was between 140 and 190 and I was very hopeful that he would be in remission with just diet change. Now today hes been around 270 all day . I'm discouraged now and thinking maybe he will need insulin. The only thing different today was that I tried that blood sugar gold stuff and I'm wondering if that could have an effect and he also does get stressed at times because we have a new puppy (big one) but they are in different parts of the house .
Any advice ?

If it were me I'd skip the blood sugar gold. At least for a few cycles or even a few days... and if his numbers go back to what they were before you started it, then I wouldn't start it again, or if you do and it goes up again you'll know for sure it's a no-no and if it doesn't then maybe it's ok.

He might have an allergy or sensitivity to one of the ingredients in that product that raises his numbers, you never know.

Any time you add in variables it makes it harder to figure out whats going on if there is a change in their numbers, I'd try to keep it as simple as possible at least for a little longer.

I wouldn't get discouraged because of just one day.

Just watch him, keep doing the stuff you know is working, and if you haven't already started testing for ketones maybe do that just in case his numbers don't go down as quickly as we're hoping.

(I was never able to do that and his pre-shot numbers weren't going down as quickly as I wanted so I just treated him as if dka was happening anyway lol just in case. I looked up what what we do if a cat has ketones and just did that anyway! lol Insulin, plenty of water, extra food. But the vet said it's very unlikely at this point so I stopped worrying about it.)

Hang in there. One day is just one day. You're doing a great job!

I agree I would not use the blood sugar gold.
Could you set up your Spreadsheet so we can see the numbers please.? It is hard for us to give advice without a SS.
Normal numbers are 50-120 on a normal cat on a human meter and 68-150 on an alphatrak.
Lantus is a good insulin. You may need to start with less than 1 unit if the numbers are not high.
I agree with Jay about testing for ketones. Buy a bottle of Ketostix and test the urine. It’s not hard, and a good thing to eliminate if you are withholding the insulin.
Keep testing and set up the SS. You are doing well.

I notice you are using a pet meter and a human meter. Best to choose one and stick to it because the numbers are different and it is very confusing having both meters in the mix. When you have decided which meter you will use, can you change it in your signature please? Most of us use the human meter here, our protocols and methods are set up to use the human meter, and the strips are much cheaper to buy for the human meters. Your choice though. :)
