Testing before insulin

This is something our vet hasn't advised us to do. And I'm not really sure what numbers are good (yet). If I test before giving an insulin shot, what's a good threshold for it being safe to give insulin?

If it matters, we use Lantus and an alpha track glucometer

If your pre-shot test is over 200 mg/dL with either a pet or human glucometer, it is usually safe to shoot.
As you collect test data on how your cat responds to Lantus, you'll be able to reduce that number.
Pop over to the Lantus forum to read the 2 methods of use. Both include getting mid-cycle tests to see how low the glucose goes. When using the Alpha Trak, that lowest glucose, or nadir, should remain at or above 68 mg/dL.

For new members, we suggest if you get a Pre-shot number under 200, you should post and ask for help. In the meantime, don't feed!!...we'll probably want you to "stall" for 20-30 minutes and then re-test to see if his numbers are coming up before advising you to shoot. Make sure your subject line says something like "Stalling, need help!" so people will know you're waiting.

It will really help if you'll start keeping track of any tests you get on our spreadsheet. Our spreadsheet is really one of the most valuable tools in our toolchests! Here are Instructions on getting the FDMB spreadsheet but if you have any problems, let us know and we can help!
