Testing and night feedings.

We started insulin today at .25 . Monster has been wearing a sensor for three days. I tried to change her shirt and she threw a fit and the sensor came loose. I am not getting data from it and it is done for. She has bounced from 235-281 all day. She was 288 on the libre and 329 on the pet meter pre shot. I don’t know what her numbers are doing since 3 pm . When do I test other than pre shot at 9:30 pm ? How often do I feed during the night?

Other than the preshots, it's best if you can get one more test each in the AM and the PM.

It's great you are starting to get data with insulin. Please remember to update the spreadsheet with the insulin dose and resulting test results. The spreadsheet is the tool we depend on to answer your questions on dosing, etc.
 
Hi @Monstybender! It’s important to give a snack at +2 - two hours after the shot — and then if you like give another one at +4. The numbers are pretty high right now but it’s good to establish habits for later on.

As for testing. If you can get that +2 test it would be great. If the +2 is much lower than the preshot number then you should check again at +4 and see how things are going. Or… if you are up in the night then a +6 might give us an idea of nadir. It should not be too low on that tiny dose, but it’s all good data.

With ProZinc, you can take the daily amount that you want your cat to eat and divide it up. Feed the major portion at breakfast and dinner and then give smaller amounts at +2 and +4. We can tweak it a little bit if necessary, but the main point is to not feed after nadir (or +6 if you don’t know when the nadir is yet.) The idea is to feed most food during the first half of the cycle when the insulin is most strongly acting to lower BG and to not cause the BG to rise too quickly toward the second half of the cycle. The snacks can be as small as a tablespoon of food (approximately— don’t stress over the amount). It depends a lot on your cat and their appetite and how much they eat at breakfast/dinner, etc.
 
Me too! 😕 I’m about to feed her again. She eats 1/4 cup every two hours till 11:30 pm then eats again at 5 am. I fed her a lil bit at 6:30 pm begging for food. It was time for her to eat at7:00. I was still doing the dishes and messing with the libre earlier.
 
The rule is not to feed within two hours of the morning and evening preshot BG tests. The reason for this is that the food can inflate the preshot BG number. We need a fasting blood glucose number so that you will know that the BG number os high enough to shoot insulin. Right now your numbers are high, but it will become increasingly important as the numbers come down.
 
So if your kitty is the kind who is getting super hungry in the last half of the cycle, it would be better to give a small snack of zero carb food at +8 or even +9 rather than feed within that two hour preshot window where newbies aren’t supposed to feed. After a few months, if you have a really good body of data to show how your cat responds to food/carbs, the two hour no food rule can be relaxed. It’s important to know, though, where the cat’s BG is before giving insulin.

Blood sugar is still high. Down about 40-50 points at night but she was up to 375 this morning from me feeding her three times during the night. She has been holding around 298 pre shot at night. We are still at .25 dose. May go up to .50 on Sunday.
 
Hi Jody! That is too high from the sound of it, but at least you have started insulin… so you have overcome many obstacles and are on the road to helping Monster. 🙂Sunday would be the time to increase after holding the .25 dose for 7 days, yes, provided things still are staying around the same levels.
