Hi all,

Just got my meter yesterday and tested Syd this morning at 257 and now it's time for his next dose, but it shows 74(did it a second time to make sure and that was at 78).
Should I be giving him the next dose or waiting?

I'll be reading up more in the meantime, but figured I would ask.

Thanks!

PZI, 2 units.

After reading more on PZI I think it is probably just to soon.

I was originally told by the doctor to just give it twice a day, so the past few days I would give the first dose at 7-7:30am and the next at 6-7pm. I forgot that I was late this morning and he didn't get his dose until 8:20.
So it really had only been a little over 10 hours. I'm guessing that if I test again at 8:30, his levels will be up again...but I am just guessing, i am just a newbie.

We generally think the lowest number in the cycle is about 6 hours after the shot, so 74 at +10 is in the low range. The advice for new diabetics is to not shoot under 200 but to wait 20 minutes and retest, without feeding. If I were you, I wouldn't shoot tonight until you are sure the number is going up, not down and is over 200.

It could be that you need to reduce the dose. We like to have new diabetics to start at a low dose (like .5 to one unit twice daily) and hold the dose for several cycles(as long as the cat doesn't go in the 40s), testing to see how the insulin is working. Then you can raise the dose as needed. It's easy to increase the dose as needed, but you can't take the insulin out once it's given.

Thanks for the response!

It's been 12 hours now and he is at 105, so he's climbing, but not enough to give him a shot at this time.

I'm going to wait until tomorrow and test in the morning. I'll adjust his dosage down as well. It's interesting that the vet still thinks I should be giving 5 units for the next week at least.

I'm thinking about trying to do the curve test sunday this weekend, so trying to read up on that now.

You were right, he was pretty high this morning: 358, gave him 1 unit checked him 7 hours later when I got home and he was at 72, then at 12 hours he was at 297.
So, I think the 1 unit is working fine.
I'm going to do a curve tomorrow. Hopefully he puts up with all the poking.

I think one unit is giving you nice safe numbers. Are you also getting rid of the dry? If so, that may reduce the numbers further, so some careful monitoring for awhile is a good idea.

Don't forget - good treats after every poke. Warming the ear was also vital for us.
