Mala is just starting on Lantus today, and I'm cruising the support board for that insulin type. I see terminology I don't understand, and no FAQ defines it.
Pinks and other colors (green, blue, yellow, red, black) refer to the color coding of the Google spreadsheet many FDMB members use. On the spreadsheet, "pink" means bg between 300 and 399 mg/dl, "yellow" is 200 to 299, blue is 100 to 199, green is 60 to 99, red is 400 to 499, and black is 500 +.
Actually a bounce should be defined as a soft rebound. Bounces rarely go to the 500s, in my experience at least. 500+ BGs can be the result of a hard rebound, where the cat probably went to hypo numbers as the result of too much insulin. Bounces can be caused by dose changes or other factors, not necessarily too high of dose. Dose changes also cause "new dose wonkiness."
Pet terms for these effects can be confusing for newbies, sorry about that. Most don't even ask, so thanks for asking. The terms simplify complex issues but their use is unique to the board so best not to use them when speaking with your vet, unless you define what you mean.
Thank you. This isn't my first go-round with this sugar kitty, but she's been at the falls since 2006. I'll get up to speed again and then, with luck and the favor of the kitty gods, I'll get to forget it all for a while as she goes back OTJ.
You sound better, Hroswitha! Hope Mala is feeling better, too!
