Taking care of over heated kitty???? what do I do no ac???

Right now Magellan is laying on the patio flat as a rug belly to the concrete and shallow panting.... tested his sugars again and it is 83 so not hypo... his pulse is a touch fast for him but not crazy fast like when loki was in thyroid distress. He is responsive to my prodings but other than that he dosent want to move and is snubbing his food!
 
If you think he's overheated, dampen down a washcloth or towel and wipe him down..it will help to cool him ...You don't want to drown him in water, so just a damp cloth should help without risking him going too far in the other direction and getting too cold
 
nods that is what I have been doing or started... but he just looks at me with his gold eyes... worried momma pants on tight!
 
ok tying one handed other holding Magellan wrapped in a wet/wrung out towel. He is looking better but still not very lively.... will keep cuddling and wiping his face and ears down, will offer some ice as well. thanks Cris...I though cats handled heat better???
 
Make sure the water is tepid, not cold.

Do you have an oscillating fan? If yes, try dampening his fur down with tepid water and make sure that he is an area where the air is being moved by the fan. The evaporation of the water is what will cool Magellan. A damp teatowel might work better than a bathroom towel. If he's lying down you could just drape it over him.

NB - be extra vigilant about keeping his head and neck cool.
 
Have you taken his temperature to see what his core body temp. is? You can put rubbing alcohol on his paw pads and his ears to help cool him down. Soak some towels in water, wring them out and put them over Magellan. If you have a box fan set it up to blow across the damp towels. The goal is to cool him down slowly.
 
Wet the paws - that is where cats sweat.
Check for dehydration.
Consider the vet if something else might be causing rapid respirations - heart/lung issues?
 
Another idea, if it isn't too humid.
Take a lightweight cloth and wet it, then hang it where a fan can blow on it. The evaporation will cool the air.
If the cloth hangs into a tray with ice water in it, so much the better.

And I recall seeing a YouTube video online for making a small air conditioner using ice, a small fan/motor, and PVC pipe, if I recall correctly.
 
all you need is a bowl of ice and put a fan blowing on it toward the cat.... that's evaporative cooling....

the other thing is take a few hand towels.... wet them , wring them out and put them in freezer for the hot days....
gives him something to lay on that's really cool.

another thing I used to do when I had car seats, is take frozen blue ice ( or make ice blocks in containers) and set them
on the seat. If you get out to go in a store, or do something, keep the ice on the seat ( or your seat)
when you return, it might be damp but it's better than that hot car scorch. Especially for your kids getting crammed into car seats.... it hold the heat on them... they can't get away from it.

We used bottles of water that we froze instead of just ice so cleaning it up (and re-making the ice overnight) was really quick and easy. :)
 
Hello all just got back on line the comp was down, yes Magellan is doing better, Maric K never thought of the rubbing alcohol to cool him down but I will keep that in the kitty care kit. I did take his temp and it was 105 when I began treatment. After a few minutes wrapped in the damp towl he started to feel better, in particular when I was using a syringe with no needle to assist him in drinking... I know over kill but what can a worry wort bean doo??

We actually tried that a couple of months ago. It wasn't powerful enough to cool a room, but I think it would certainly be enough to cool down a corner for a cat. We used bottles of water that we froze instead of just ice so cleaning it up (and re-making the ice overnight) was really quick and easy. :)

I like that idea too right now any ideas are good we are dou to get temps in the high 90's and 100 for the next several days! and aug is the hottest time of year for us. I love all the resonances hope I got everyone I dont want to leave anyone out and I really appreciate all the love and concern.
 
Julia Rae, animals that have overheated can develop a condition known as DIC (disseminated Intravascular Coagulation). Please watch Magellan for small purple/red spots or unusual bruising. Petechia is a sign of DIC and requires immediate medical attention.
 
My 87 year old mom told me when we were discussing the heat and how people handled it before AC , that she remembers her grandmother putting a block on ice in the middle of the room and put the fan on it to blow cool mist to help keep it cool.
 
Ewww that sounds both scary and nasty Marcie... So far Magellan is doing better, I have started supplying ice cubes in there water fountain and Magellan's lock down has been lifted.. he now has access to the patio at demand once again.
 
I like the idea Bobbie but dont have a place really to keep that amount of ice available or to transport said ice. I use public transportation... it works but it can be challenging.

WHaaaTT??

If you have like $250-500 you can go to Home Depot or anywhere really and get a portable AC. Manager can't say no to that, it's just an appliance. Plugs into regular 120v socket and has a exhaust hose you can just shove in the window with panes that block the rest of the window. 5 minute set-up, tear-down. I have one and it's the best thing money can buy!

I also think it's mildly illegal to tell people they CANNOT have air conditioning, especially if you live in a hot/humid area.
