Switching to levemir

Cat has been on novolin n for 6 months. The vet kept upping the dosage. Currently 3.5 u two times a day. I started home testing a month ago and did my own curves. I showed it to the vet yesterday and asked to be switched to levemir. The vet had no problem with this but the vet admitted they know nothing about levemir. So the wrote the script for lantus. I told her I wanted levemir and she said it's the same thing. Is this true? Thank you all.

No Lantus and levemir are not the same insulin, but they are similar types in that they are both longacting gentle insulins, are both depot type insulins and basically act in the same way..
Both are excellent choices for cats. Levemir has a bit later onset than Lantus and can last longer in some cats.....
Lantus can sting at larger doses so people who use larger doses faver levemir.
I used both with Sheba. My preference is levemir but Lantus is just as good.

Another advantage of Levemir over Lantus is that some kitties have flatter curves with Lev. Disadvantage is it is a few bucks more.

I've used both Lantus and Levemir - MUCH prefer Levemir. I really like the much gentler, flatter action per cycle. I order from a pharmacy in Canada that a lot of diabetic cat parents use. A 5-pack of Levemir pens is about $175 plus shipping.

Levemir requires a different 'mindset' for handling each cycle. Levemir onset isn't for 4-5 hours after the injection - the next shot time is closer to the previous cycle's nadir than 'end of cycle'. You'll learn to shoot lower numbers as there's several hours of rising afterwards before next cycle onset. I like the later onset - I have several hours to get enough food in my little old man kitty rather than him needing a good food load at shot time.

I have used both Lantus and Levemir. One time I switched back to Lantus since I got a good deal on a vial of Lantus. With Levemir I get a much flatter curve than Lantus. Like the drop from preshot to low is about 20 or less.

Oh, my goodness, your vet thinks Lantus and Levemir are 'the same thing'. Scary. Lantus is a brand name for glargine and Levemir is a brand name for detemir. Not the same thing.

I am on team Levemir. Never tried Lantus, but when I knew I wanted to change Mia from ProZinc, after doing research, I went with Levemir and have not been disappointed.
